G4 Processor upgrades - do they work ?

I have a G4 AGP Graphics with a 400Mhz proc on board, and I am using DP 2.7 under the OS 9.2.2 option within the G4's OS 10.3. I'm thinking of upgrading the processor to one of those Sonnet-Encore 1.0 or 1.2 Ghz processors, and maybe go up to DP 4.? Do these processor upgrades work okay with DP ? For financial reasons, I am sticking with the G4, and 2.7 (maybe 4.? later) so buying a G5 and DP 5 isn't yet an option

Even a Mac Mini would probably outperform the upgrade...

why would you buy a G5? and if you mean a Macpro. well.. a macmini would still kick your sonnet-encore's ass, and the cost might not be a big difference.

The cost limitation is that there are two G4s, as there are two writers occasionally collaborating, so any upgrades are x 2, we don't have the money to replace both and also upgrade the DP x2 as well, that's why we're looking at interim (perhaps) advantages like just doing what we can with the G4.

Yes they work with DP. I use gigadesigns dual 1.2 in a quicksilver w OS X 10.4 DP 5.12

MOTU recommends Sonnett -- search the technotes at motu site-- I think it is because Sonnett helps them test DP w thier upgrades.

You need to be careful because some of the upgrades do not support OS 9.

DP 4 is DOG SLOW. You will want to upgrade to DP 5.12

But a caveat -- These upgrades are still quite expensive -- an intel core duo MAC Mini or intel Macbook would give you much better bang for your buck.

Alternately if you are determined to stick w G4 it could be that buying a whole machine on ebay might be more cost effective -- dunno I have not checked prices in a while, but last time I did bottom was falling out of g4 market.
