Can I lay a G5 tower on its side?

It would be better for me to lay it on its side like a desktop machine rather than as a tower.

Additionallly, in the old days conventional wisdom was if you were going to change the orientation of a machine (desktop to tower, vice versa) you should reformat the drive in the new intended position.

Is that something I have to worry about?

Funny you mention this... I was wondering the same thing about my G5 2.3DP. I think some of the audio workstation furniture out there might be designed this way.

That would exclude putting any CD/DVD in it then I guess...

You can, indeed, run a computer in nearly any angle and the only real issue (as mentioned earlier) is inserting disks in the CD-DVD drive. In fact, there are some after market products to rack mount a G5...

Many of the drive trays have notches on the perimeter to hold disks in a vertical position for this very reason.
