You should just check out MOTU's site and read up on DP's feature set and just look around here for answers to some questions about DP... Plus if you have iTunes go here: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSt ... =189132743

I see you are about to buy in another thread, but thought I would put this here for the future.
SoundonSound has some very comprehensive reviews of DP w screenshots etc that will give you a great idea of how it works -- I am starting w DP3 because that version is really the basis of today's DP:
MOTU Digital Performer v3
The latest and greatest incarnation of MOTU's flagship Mac sequencer adds full surround mixing support among many other new features.
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/Nov01/a ... otudp3.asp
----------------
MOTU Digital Performer 4.5
The migration to OS X has caused major upheavals for both software manufacturers and musicians, but Mark Of The Unicorn's long-established Digital Performer sequencer is better than ever.
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb05/a ... tudp45.htm
--------
Digital Performer Notes
DP 4.5 delivers new features that promise to fundamentally change the way users work, as well as offering smaller but crucial enhancements to existing features.
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan05/a ... rnotes.htm
-----
MOTU Digital Performer 5
Mark Of The Unicorn's flagship recording package combines individual design with a heavyweight feature set. Could Digital Performer be the sequencer for you?
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/sep06/a ... ormer5.htm
-----
Seriously these reviews are great and will give you a lot of info. Note -- the DP5 review you need to be a either a subscriber to SOS or pay a nominal fee to download a pdf as it is relatively recent. However the others are free to view. Even if you don't want to pay to view DP5, I think you will get a lot out of the others I linked.

Thanks Newrigel and Mzeltinger I stumbled across them last night after I posted. Very informative. And thanks Emulatorloo I think I had found one of those but the links contain a great deal of info. I will read them later tonight as I have to TRY and get through one last session with C4 this afternoon. I hope I don't go insain before I get to read the reviews.
Anyway a few things that come to mind that someone may know right off the top is:
1) Can I set up an Aux to a stereo output say 3-4 on my interface for monitoring (I would assume that I can just checking)
2) Anyone using DP to track Rap Hip Hop? If so how's that working for you? At the moment I do alot of manual chopping of beats vocals and reconstructing them for clients for the perfect take. I am hoping DP will provide a better platform for this.
3) I do radio spots and am slated to start scoring a TV series late summer how does DP handle in these enviroments. (I'm guessing it's going to blow C4 away here, at least I am hoping for it to do)
4) can you cutomize the meters in DP? I.E. different colors for different volume? Not a biggie but I had C4 set up to register blue up to -18 and green from -18 to -12. It was just easier for me to glance and know I was either in the ballpark or not while setting up tracks.
5) Does DP have track presets ala Logic and no C4? Again not a biggie but just wondering?
Well I'll think of more and I am sure the podcasts and articles will answer some of these just thought I'd post these now. Thanks again and if all goes as planned and I like what i see I will be ordering DP 5.1 tomorrow!

I just finished work on a hip hop track using DP. Worked great. Of course, what really matters in this genre case is the gear feeding into DP (e.g., what you use to produce beats, record vocals, process everything).2) Anyone using DP to track Rap Hip Hop? You can use DP's Sequence Editor window to chop and move recorded audio. You can use the Graphic Editor to arrange MIDI. They seem to cover my editorial needs.
DAW apps are pretty much the same, by and large, but each has its own strong area. DP accels in score-to-picture tasks. It's probably the main reason I use it.3) I do radio spots and am slated to start scoring a TV series late summer how does DP handle in these enviroments. Not really. Metering isn't great or very flexible in DP.4) can you cutomize the meters in DP? I.E. different colors for different volume? It does have a new meter window which has the virtue of being big.
It has a few, yeah, but you're better off creating your own projects templates. The provided ones are too general, I think.5) Does DP have track presets ala Logic and no C4? Again not a biggie but just wondering?
I've created DP templates for different kinds of projects. It's easy to do and allows you to customize to your own needs.
DP is PERFECT for this and really it is more geared towards this type of content creation development!Slave8 wrote:Thanks Newrigel and Mzeltinger I stumbled across them last night after I posted. Very informative.

Well, ah, ummm,
I just ordered DP 5!!!
Let the silly nebie questions begin!
Anyway thanks all for your input and I am sure I will have questions but so far I this forum has been a huge help in easing my mind about using Dp in my workflow. As a matter of fact I have a few questions that I think I'll start a new topic about later to get more hyped about DP arrival Friday!

There IS a demo mode built into DP. I stumbled upon it by mistake. My authorization/Mac User mode got screwed up, and I got a message upon opening the app to the effect of, "The demo period has expired." I'm guessing that MOTU can enable the Demo Mode for people such as yourself in this situation.muxlow wrote:When I was shopping, I called MOTU about a demo. They said "no" but if I bought DP from THEM, they would give 30 days to test drive it.
Not sure if that's an official offer or just a sales rep in a good mood that day, but I figured it was worth mentioning.

The 'DEMO' mode in question on DP is what happens when you install it but haven't entered the authorization code yet.
Most applications do this to enable you enough time to register by phone/mail if you don't have the internet. DP doesn't require an online authorization, but for some reason they've left it in.
At least it enables DP users to let friends install DP for the 'trial' period to decide whether they want to buy it - just don't give them your authorization code!
