noise/clicking is often the result of a lack of CPU/RAM. Try to lower your buffer settings

I splashed out for the Ampeg SVX back in January when they were having the special offer (SVX + Free Amplitube Live2 and T-Racks mastering).

I can't speak enough about how awesome this plug-in is. 4 great amp heads and about 6 different cabinets with a selection of 5 or 6 different mics to choose from (including different mic placements) and stomp boxes. If you've got a decent bass which has been recorded well through DI this definitely takes the sound to the next level. It just makes the bass 'sit' in the mix by enhancing the 'good' frequencys and getting rid of the 'bad' ones. I guess just like a good bass amp.

After using this plug-in I just can't go back to mixing straight DI'ed bass guitar any more. And by running it on my laptop in stand-alone mode I can get the latency down low enough to record in with it live, rather than just DI-ing and applying it later.

Hey Cliff, How would you compare it to a real Amp plugged-in from the DI? I have a SWR Mo'Bass and an Ashdown Preamp but I always track them DI.
Do you prefer the mic settings from that plug-in? Or even a DI from that plug in over a real Amp?

To be honest I've had a lot more experience recording guitars & guitar amps than basses. I've often ended up going with the DI signal from the amp over the mic in front of the cabinet because it was just so often all boomy and with no definition - no doubt mic choice and position makes a big difference here. A friend of mine has a USA Lakland (nice!) and a Gallien Kruger amp which sounds fantastic just from the direct out of the amp. I deinitely prefer that to just plugging the bass straight into a DI box.

On my bands last EP we had a 'real' Ampeg bass amp (mic + direct amp out) and on the one we're recording at the moment I'm just using the SVX. I think we're possibly pulling even better bass tone on this one.

To me - and I don't have a 'real' ampeg amp to compare it to - this plug-in makes the bass sound like that awesome sound we hear when the bass player plugs into his expensive bass amp, but is so often quite elusive to try and actually capture on 'tape'.

So, yes, like you I usually end up going DI when recording real bass amps but I'm finding that I'm using the 100% mic'ed settings a lot on this one. I've been mixing a (rocking) jazz fusion band the last couple of days and roughly a 50-50 split of DI vs. Amp has been working well. The bass player is the GK guy (see above) and he's loving the sound I'm pulling for his bass - the tracking engineer plugged him straight into a DI box - but I'm not allowed to tell anyone that I'm using Ampeg for his sound :)

My favourite preset style for Ampeg thus far is the fingered "Round Comp" one... wow...
