Keyswitching: how?

Post by homebilly »

So I have spent the better part of yesterday trying to figure out Keyswitching in MachFive, yes reading the manual.

I have many questions but not many answers.

I decided to keep it simple so I decided to re-import my SAM solo horn in EXS DVD.

I converted the entire instrument so that i could see how UVIX was going to translate things and then i studied that.

So, then i decided to narrow it down to the EXS Keyswitching patches and i chose patch:

18 FrenchHorn Key Basic A to start with
(i also loaded it into Logic/EXS so that i could A/B them as i worked)

It is a patch that in EXS has 4 keyswitchable articulations and 4 layers
per articulation. in EXS you load the patch and KS away but the
conversion in M5 leaves you with 4 different presets (representing the
articulations) with 4 layers per preset.

18 FrHn Key Basic A f-A
18 FrHn Key Basic A f-B
18 FrHn Key Basic A f-C
18 FrHn Key Basic A f-D

so in order to hear the different articulations you must load 4 instances of the patch and choose an articulation per instance. on the
recommendation of MeeLoo i decided to use Expert mode to understand it a bit. the manual has very little on how it works so i did my best.

the best that i can figure out is that you load the patch 4 times-each with
a different articulation. go into expert mode. select part and activate turn it ON. assign a keyswitch then change the MIDI channel so that all
4 patches are the same. i used MIDI channel 1 on all patches.

Is this how keyswitching in M5 is supposed to work? or am i missing something?

i tried the stack conversion as well as the switch conversion and it gets me the 4 articulations stacked one atop the other with all 4 layers present as well. the only problem is that ALL 4 articulations and their respective layer play at the same time. trying to sort that out took some time.

it seems to me that this is a lot of work to ket a simple KS patch to work.

All help is gladly appreciated as i'd like to get this working while i wait for M5II

**the conversions also create performances but i am unable to load them or even see them. what am i doing wrong?

thanks

This is the way it is supposed to work, yes. I think I remember the extract utility should have created performances in this sound bank with the keyswitching already programmer for you. I may be mistaken though...

Hope this helps
