Using all of the travllers available ins/outs? how to?

Post by LUKO79 »

Ok so I have owned my traveller for a while, and for as long as i can remember just used the 8 analogue 1/4" ins

does anybody out there use more than just these 8 ins? and if so how do you do it?

I want to get a patchbay so i am not reaching around the back of my rack all the time, and am hoping to get something i can plug the ins/outs of the travller into and perhaps even convert them into 1/4 " ins/outs?

is this making sense?

cheers for any helps guys! 8)

You don't want to "convert" any off the digitalconnections.
This will (very simply said) screw up your digital connection.
That means leave the Wordclock, SPdif & AES-EBU connections alone while "coverting"
(you'll also don't want to use normal RCA or XLR cables to connect gear with SPdif or AES-EBU; it will "work"; but you're really screwing with clocking signals resulting in pour quallity audio)

So patch your analog connections (jacks en xlrs)
Try to figure out if you want to do this ballanced or unballanced.
and keep in mind that if you're gonna use a prefab patchbay that is isn't internally patching your ins & outs (it's possible if it ain't de-normalled) read about this in a manual (as example this Alto ballanced panel page 7) http://www.altoproaudio.com/manual/ALTO ... nglish.pdf

Have you looked into an adat interface? The Behringer ADA8000 garners much praise and it's only $230. That will give you eight extra inputs and outputs. It connects to your traveller via adat lightpipe (optical toslink cable). Slave the ADA's clock to the traveller and your ready for 16 i/o.

OK had a quick read..

so if i get one of these interfaces that will allow me to run the TOSlink from the traveller into that i will then get an extra 16 D.I's !! ??

that sounds exactly what i am after :)

almost right :)

it provides you with eight additional preamps, which you can run via adat (so you can 8 channels)

If you would go for something like the presonus digimax FS this will provide you also with 8 additional outputchannels (you'll need to run a second adat cable)

Alto has got an similair preamp to the ADA8000, only with much better preamps. It has got some great reviews.

And there's always the 8pre from motu. Aside from being a standalone firewire interface, you can hook it up similair to the ADA8000 to get an additional 8 preamps.

So if you're on a thight budget go for the behringer.
Otherwise spend them extra bugs on a alto MP8D or Motu 8pre
It will sound a whole lot better!

going on about them extra channels.

Using SPdif will get you also an aditional 2 channels.
You can hook up stuff like a line6 POD pro/ Bass POD pro
and a lot of TC electronic stuff also has SPdif.

but you can also use an preamp with digital output
I'm sure behringer has got one (although I'm not fund of behringer)
But the ALTO MP2D is a great sounding, low/medium budget one
or go tube preamp with a DBX386.

lot's of options to expand
