Possible ADC workaround for UAD users

Post by mchimes »

I found and solved a problem today and thought I would share it here as I know there are some issues with UAD and DP ADC. First off, I'm in 4.61 on 10.3.9. running UAD 4.5 (just got it . . . man these sound great. But I was disappointed that the ADC stuff wasn't all sorted out by now)

Problem:

Phase issues (major and minor) when inserting a Waves compression plug-in on a parallel drum Aux track while using UAD plugs on both original drum tracks AND other Aux tracks

I discovered the problem while experimenting with parallel drum compression techniques i read about over at GS. I assigned all the drum track outputs to an Aux Fader. I then sent (via Sends) the same tracks to a a number of different Aux tracks with various compressors to audition which flavor of "slam" sounded best :) I tried several UAD compressors, the Sonalksis 315 and Waves RenC. It was rockin . . . then the nasties came . . . when I raised the Waves fader, it was WAY out on the order of dicreet echos. This ONLY happened with the Waves. The UAD, Sonalksis, MOTU and Tritone plugs I tried worked fine.

I then by-passed the RenC . . . same deal. Then on the offending fader, I inserted a Waves EQ (instead of the RenC) and there was no phasing whatsoever. I tried the RVerb and no phasing at all. As it turns out, only the Waves plugs with dynamics processing had any phase shift. But what was weird was when I inserted the Desser (just to see) and by passed it, there was phasing, but very minimal (same with RChannel and RVox.) I then deleted that plug from the fader and it was just in-phase unprocessed audio again. Weird. So the Waves compressors weren't reporting right or something.

Solution:

After messing around a while, I found that this worked consistently for solving both the major and minor phase issues in the plugs.

1) Add the plugs you want, if ADC doesn't resolve the "phasing"

2) Disable ADC in Studio setup, then

3) Re-enable ADC in Studio setup, see if phasing is gone

By "disable," I don't mean just uncheck and recheck the box in the same operation. You have to actually turn ADC off and wait the time for DP to reboot the studio setting and then reenable it the same way.

Anyway, hope this helps or at least jogs some other tips . . .

One things I haven't figured out is why the transients in the Level Meter in the Mix window tracks hit before they sound when UAD plugs are on, arrrgggg!
