Playback glitches post OSX 10.4.6 upgrade
ello,
I run a PCI-424/2408mkII/Mac G4 733/DP4.61 system which worked
great under OSX 10.2.6. When I upgraded to 10.4.6 I started
getting playback glitches (the CPU monitor idles at a very low
level and then occasionally redlines quickly then drops back down,
The audio playback glitch happens as the CPU redlines).
It happens with large or small sessions and doesn't seem
to happen whether I'm using my SCSI disks or Firewire disks
to work from.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jon

This is why I always suggest cloning your system drive before upgrading.
Unfortunately, the range of possible issues and solutions mean you may have to spend some time tracking this one down. I suggest you start by making sure your MOTU drivers are up to date and permissions are repaired.
Good luck!

DP4.61 with OSX 10.4.9
Hey Jumpin, I'm having the same problem... Smooth sailing with DP4.61 and OSX 10.3.9. But once I jumped to 10.4.9 (today) I have the same playback glitches... It doesn't matter if I have one mono track going, or 32 stereo tracks, it acts the same. I've updated drivers, and re-installed DP (at MOTU's suggestion.) Still bad. Fortunately, I do have my previous system cloned... I'll post as I make progress.

Yep-- new OS and new drivers which were perhaps designed for a later version of DP-- yet running an older version of DP. I know, it says "compatible 'x-y-z' or later, but different combos of drivers, software versions, and operating systems can cause trouble. It's not quite so interchangeable as that.
Please note: *some* users are experiencing oddities upgrading from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9.
I'd suggest starting over and then stopping at 10.4.8.

Clone your current hard drive (back up to another drive-- then wipe your original drive clean by reformatting).Slave8 wrote:How would one "start over" and stop at 10.4.8?
Here's some shareware that will do the trick nicely-- Carbon Copy Cloner:

Reinstall OSX Tiger from disc-- get an internet connection going and download and install all required versions suggested by Apple to get you from the disc version of OSX up to 10.4.8.
Reinstall the version of DP you want to use, then install the latest drivers made for THAT VERSION of DP and your MIDI and Audio interfaces. If and only if there are driver issues, you may consider updating the drivers to an even later version-- but one thing at a time.
Reinstall the latest versions of your third-party plugins.
Off ya go.

As a quick note, I have switched from CCC to SuperDuper. CCC still has some troubles with retaining proper permissions and such. An independent company went through and tried every backup solution for OSX and SuperDuper was the only one that seemed to do the best job. Works VERY well.
If you did an upgrade from 10.2 to 10.4, I am going to tell you right now, you need to reinstall from scratch. I have tested on 4 different machines (Mini,Powerbook,G5,Sawtooth) the different between upgrading & just doing a fresh install. The performance numbers were staggeringly different. To confirm, I used Xbench just to make sure what I was seeing was accurate. I am not sure what happens, but it is significant.
Also, I'd REALLY recommend going to 5.11 with the latest drivers for everything. I am doing this and my system is the most stable it has ever ever ever been.
