G5 sleep problem

G5 sleep problem
My Dual 2GHz G5 sometimes freezes during sleeping: nothing actually happens when I try to wake it up.
After I force it to restart it boots with hard disk running sound but monitor is blank (just like wrong resolution or refresh rate selected)
To get it back up and running I need to run either "open firmware", "single user boot", or any other dialog in text monitor mode.
Reinstaling system software and applications didn't haelp. Does anyne have an idea?

First of all, once you get it started, disable sleep mode. Sleep mode and screensavers are the nemsis of DAWs. They're cute and all, but they get in the way and interfere with drivers, etc.abtop wrote:My Dual 2GHz G5 sometimes freezes during sleeping: nothing actually happens when I try to wake it up.

if you are still having trouble, get DiskWarrior or TechTools or some other reliable disc utility-- and don't forget to repair permissions since sleep mode is OSX related.
If that doesn't work, try to re-reinstall the system software-- this time "Archive and Install". That will save everything else on your hard drive while creating a whole new system folder.

Actually I disagree. Sleep works fine on my Quad, except for two things. 1. Sometimes things that light up (draw power) such as a card reader/writer I have, will keep the computer from sleeping. Just don't keep them plugged in and you will be fine. And 2. I had a devil of a time with a faulty 424 PCIe card that I got from MOTU. Not only would it not sleep, but when rebooting it often wouldn't recognize the card. I complained, they sent me a new one, and the problem went away. In fact, PCI cards are the number one problem with not being able to sleep (and Ambien won't work either)
So maybe there's an issue with a PCI card. Anyway, once I solved these two problems my computer sleeps ande wakes up from sleep just fine, even with DP on.

kinney--
That's good to hear that you've found some solution for sleep mode.
I can't get it to behave on my computer-- and I'd consider a new card except that I just got a new one earlier this year. Hmm. Could your solution be one only available to those with PCIe? I'm a bona fide no-go with sleep mode... and am stuck in PCIx world for a while yet.
abtop may be in the same position as I am with his non-PCIe Dual.
For me, I manually spin down the HDs and shut off the monitor when I don't want to shut down completely, but maybe when I get an Intel this will be less an issue.

Frodo,
Don't know about PCIx cards, as I never had one of those computers. And for all I know, since my PCIe card was one of the first (a serial number around 100 as I recall) they've probably fixed the problem now (although you wouldn't know due to MOTU's much-talked-about secrecy). But replacing the card definitely cured all my sleep problems. And I must admit, it's great to walk away from DP for an hour or so for lunch, come back and hit a key and within seconds be up and running again.

Re: G5 sleep problem
I've only had once instance where my dual 2.0 (all current) would not wake and would not even restart! Fans were about to lift the unit off the ground they were spinning so damn fast. I was close to panic. I never sleep the machine, never use a screensaver and almost never shut it off.
Fortunately, I recently installed Applejack and ran it at startup. Couldn't be easier and cleaned up the problem instantly! I now keep it residing on my machine waiting to fix something, but hopefully it neever will again. If I did not have that program, I might still be trying to boot!

150k downloads and 4.9 out of 5 rating on VersionTracker. Safe as can be and perfect for times when it just won't boot.
Oh yeah, did I mention it is freeware?

The best part is IT WORKS!sdemott wrote:AppleJack gets my thumbs-up! all the things I would do normally when troubleshooting are automated via a simple shell script. Very cool.
I just grabbed it.

I have a G4 and it will not wake from sleep after I put in a new usb2 card. I have to shut down via the front switch.
