Effects List for Drums

Post by msmith92 »

Do any of you have a list of effects and routing you almost always tend to use? ie..do you take overheads and send them to an aux with an 1176 (uad) on them or always have an la2a on the kick. do you always group a certain set of drum pieces together and send them to an aux with a special plugin on them. just curious to see what is routine for most.

About the only thing I ALWAYS do is listen before inserting any plug-ins. There may be a situation where I'll put a trim in place when I know I'll be using automation, but for the most part I always use my ears first. Use your ears (and trust them) to decide what a track needs, not a laundry list...Just my two cents. Hope it's helpful.

I try to mix for the song itself instead of doing anything as a preset thing.

obvious things like compression here and there, the eq'ing and such, but I tend to look at each song differently.

One time I mixed my drums...I went thru and eq'd everything and save the settings to use on other songs recorded in the same session.

I applied those eq settings and got a pretty consistant sound, but still ended up tweaking things here and there.

I guess it was more of a setup and workflow question. example. i always put the overheads on an aux channel and everything else on the kit gets bussed to another aux mix. i do that so later on i can turn the drum mix up or down within my own mix. a lot of the times my room mic ends up with a "wet" reverb on it and i use that as my overall verb.

Actually that's a little tougher to answer (as far as how I work). I guess workflow really is the key, and that varies from project to project. Sometimes I'll buss to an aux mix, as you mentioned. Sometimes I won't. It all depends on what I anticipate the project will require from a workflow perspective.

Some people like to set up their projects the same way all the time, the advantage being that with familiarity comes increased work efficiency. I tend to re-invent the wheel. I will look at each project as a new creation and set things up accordingly. I'm sure I'm opening up myself to major criticism for saying that, but that's just my creative side kicking and screaming and my science background.

I don't suppose that's the answer you were looking for, but I really believe it's a matter of personal preference. Set thinks up the way YOU like to work and your work won't be a chore.

Just my opinion.
