Non Intel DP crashes?
Okay, these threads and responses are getting overwhelming. I'm trying to figure out what the heck to do here. I've followed Frodo's instructions, as have others I see, to no avail. It seems to me there are three possible problems:
Mac + Intel
Mac + Intel + DP 5.1
DP5.1
I agree, though I have no previous DP experience, that it is likely not a DP fault. I have had a couple other occasions with other apps "quiting unexpectedly," which leads me to believe it's a Mac + Intel problem (all apps, bundles, etc aside.) I have a friend who is an engineer at Intel here is Folsom who basically said "expect it to take awhile for the relationship (Mac Intel) to work out all the kinks. Par for the course with new tech."
So I think I'm sending my MacBook Pro back for an older powerbook and my question is:
IS ANYONE HAVING THESE PROBLEMS WITH 5.1 ON ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE INEL MAC?
I basically can't work and this creates problems for me. I saw a repsonse on one of these threads that someone sent their crash reports to MOTU more than two months ago and still hasn't gotten a decent response or a fix for the problem. I got a "we're looking into it" last week. Maybe it's just not MOTU's fault and they just can't fix it.
So before I save everything to disc, empty this Mac and send it back, I would REALY appreciate any responses to the above question, because I'm thinking getting rid of Intel on the Mac all together just might fix it.
Thanks a BUNCH, all.

I'm feeling your pain, but I can't really help you much. I am running DP 5.1 on a G5 Tower and the latest Tiger, thru a Digidesign 002r with no problems, and DP 5.01 on a PowerBook/G4/667/DVI with OSX 10.3.9. and the PB's SoundManager (native audio), and sometimes the Digidesign box...
My sense is that 3rd party plug-ins are a great source of instability. What other programs is your Intel Mac set up to run? It could be something there too.
Bad memory has often proven to be a problem, even when, at first, it seemed like good memory. The best way to check the RAM chips is trial and error, taking them out till you get a working system, then adding them one by one (or two by two if the system requires RAM in pairs.)
But it seems you are already committed to sending it back, so good luck with your new/older PowerBook; although in the long run, I think you will wish you had an Intel machine in a year or so.

I spent a little time with a friend's macbook pro and DP 5.1 and I found it to be just great.
It was a very clean system, no third party haxies, etc.
It was with DP 5.1 and no third party plug-ins.
It was with known good RAM.

So I want to second Tommy's post and say check out your RAM to make sure it is good.
Do you have an external firewire drive? If so why not try installing 10.4 and DP to that drive and boot from it. That would help you figure out if perhaps your system on your internal HD is corrupt.

It's tough to figure out what's going on here. Some people are having no problems at all - others are having daily crashes. For what ever reason, I'm one of the lucky ones. My system has been stable.
Some of the folks here have worked hard at trying to find a common thread and get to the bottom of this, but apparently to no avail. I can only assume MOTU is having similar problems trying to troubleshoot the bugs.
Make a sacrifice to the silicon god and hope for the best.
