importing windows media video

Post by baanes »

Someone gave me a video to score in windows media video format. Is there any way to import this to score in dp without buying the "pro" flip4mac and/or quicktime pro (or anything)? I'm looking at mencoder but can't find info on whether it will encode to something quicktime compatible.

Interesting:

Not sure if this helps-- or not sure even how to do it, but this is from MOTU's site regarding PCI-424 interfaces:

MOTU PCI Audio Console - where you select your digital I/O type, sample rate, clock source, and default I/O (eg. for Core Audio apps like iTunes playback, or for standard Windows multimedia apps like Windows Media Player).[/b]

Well, there are two things, you have to watch for:

The Media Player
The Codecs

When you have all the codecs, every media player can handle the videos.

I worked under Windows, so it should work under Mac OS too ;)
If not, look around fpr additional codecs.

Maybe the Divx-player can help you.

If not, you have to convert.

I found someone with qt pro who did it for me- you can import wmv (and save as another format) with the free flip4mac (wmv codecs for qt), you just get a watermark, which isn't a problem in this situation. Good idea on imovie, I'll try that next time.

Frodo - I think what you have found is talking about setting up windows media player on windows to use the motu interface. Transcoding a video like this doesn't have much to do with the audio hardware.

I have no use for iMovie as I have never owned a videocamera (yet I am a semi-pro still photographer), so don't know it very well. I did however start it up on my desktop a couple of weeks ago and attempted to see if it could open a WMV and save in another format. This did not appear to be the case. What did I miss? Is there some trick? I thought I looked through all the menus for some back-door path to conversion/import/export/etc.

You need the wmv codecs, aka flip4mac. I just tried the imovie suggestion since so many people seem to be asking and it did work. You still get the watermark-think unless you buy the upgraded version of flip but it works.
