DP Users in Oz?

Post by Adam Howden »

Hi All,

Am based in Melbourne, Australia and was just kinda wanting to get in touch with some DP users in Oz. I've been using since version 3 ish, and whilst no expert am pretty competent none the less. Guess I just wanted to touch base with any users in Oz, colaborate chat etc with a little more local focus :-)

Those interested can buzz me an email at:

Cheers, Adam.

G'day, Adam.
Left ATARI for Mac and DP 2.7.
I don't know any DP or even DAW users (apart from those on da Nation, of course).
Sound on Sound and UnicorNation have been "it".
Well, you know SOS gets here 6 weeks late, and if you type with 10 numb thumbs as I do, well...
You've just posted a question I've been meaning to ask for sooo long!

Have you ever wondered how much Unicorn ground you could cover on the 'phone in an hour?
I figured, for me at least, it'd be 4 to 6 months.

I'm not sure I possess the required geek-skills, but I'll give it a go!
Cheers.

PS: Mr_Clifford seems like a cool dude; I like his attitude and sense of humour.
Hopefully he jumps onto this thread too, along with the rest of the Aussie invasion!

I placed this post as an eMail in the stalk's beak and told it to follow the cable connected to the side of the house 'till it reaches you.
I know; it's low-tech, but hey, all my money goes into MOTU stuff!
Hope you get it or check the thread soon, as I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi guys, I'm based in Sydney and am a DP newby. I heard excellent things about DP 4 at AFTRS from the composers and lately have crossed over from Pro Tools for composition, as well as surround mixing. I've been very busy with film work of late, but ordered in the Mac Audio Lab DVD for DP 5 which is meant to be quite helpful. I'm more of a sound designer and mixer, however have lofty ambitions of composing a great film score one day. I have just purchased EW Symphonic Orchestra which is pretty chunky. Feel free to email me with a hello or any system tips etc: philjeffers@hotmail.com

Yo, Laurie.
I'm in Melbourne.
No live gigs, sorry. Used to play years ago, though.
Just composing and recording contemporary music.

I couldn't seem to gain access to your profile, so can't eMail you...
If you eMail me your number, I'll call.
Cheers

Hey Phil, I learnt DP at AFTRS when I was studying there a few years ago! Most of the film composers in Australia seem to use it. At least the Sydney & Brisbane ones. Maybe Melbourne is a Logic occupied territory.

Hi Mr Clifford, yeah I think it's a film composers favourite. I know Danny Elfman is a long time DP user (remember Oingo Boingo!?). I was enrolled for a weekend course you were taking at AFTRS a few years back, but got side-swiped by a TV mix the same weekend. I know Martin A. is a DP user and it was the platform of choice at AFTRS at least when I was there 4 years ago. I think there's a lot of Aussie DP users who don't frequent Unicornation. Take it easy.

Hi all

I'm a Melbourne based DP user, ever since Gibson killed Opcode Vision. Logic has a very strong hold here, probably because a lot of people here used Notator on the Atari. I'm teaching film scoring at Box Hill TAFE and trying to get DP to be the software of choice there. I'm pretty good with most aspects of DP, although there are some I've never touched(Polar, drum editor) so if anyone needs help let me know.

I'm based in Adelaide and use DP in a semi professional manner. I know it pretty well although I only use about 5% of what it's capable of really. I do bits and pieces of multitracking (8 tracks max) and generally use DP to knock up ideas in my home studio which I then take to my band. We then annoy local punters in pubs with said tunes.

I know of several "big name" industry people, particularly in the tv &/or film scoring/production biz using DP around the country and a few audio/production guys here in Adelaide too.

Remember, it's not the size that counts. It's how you use it!

DP in Oz

Hi All,

Thanks for the responses so far, there doesn't seem to be a hell of a lot of you out there, but I guess its the quality not the quantity. I work in film/video production and use DP for sound mixes, for writing tracks for my band and producing my own production music for corporate videos as well as doing a remix or two here and there. From my experience it does seem like Logic gets a pretty good look in in Melb, especially with local producers of dance music and the like. Anywho, lets keep on a rocking, and see if we get any more popping up :-)

Hi Ben, I hail from Adelaide (well, Horsham, Vic originally). For some peculiar reason I did 4.5 years at the art school, then music school, then came here to go to film school! I managed to fit in the SAE course as well. I never want to do a tertiary course again! (Although, I did consider trying my luck at the Sydney Con). I used to play in loud bands around Adelaide years ago. There was no programmed music really though... one of the bands used a synth though! I'm too old and grumpy to be in bands anymore, but still love music and want to compose more film score material. Newer audio apps amaze me. I really have so much respect for emerging VI's and sequencers. I remember vividly bouncing down Tascam 4 Track recordings 20 years ago and being so stoked of the quality. Good luck with the band.

Great idea Adam. I'll probably have some mixing questions for you down the track a little. I haven't had much of a chance to get fluid with DP's mixing environment yet, but intend on using it a lot more in the near future. I really like the PCI option for MOTU hardware and so far have found 4.61 and now 5.1 pretty solid. It's great that you can use more than one QT file, and the snap-shot function is invaluable. I've just bought Peak Pro 5 to use within DP too as a dedicated editor. I haven't used Peak for years, but remember it to be excellent. I think Logic may be a little more user friendly? More VI's. I have looked at Logic and Nuendo, and have basically opted for DP, PT's (which I've used for 8 or so years) and Peak (Oh, I just got Sound Forge 8 for my Notebook also). Basically I have to stop buying software and learn how to use it really well!

Well so far I've mixed about 100 + cd's using DP in its various incarnations. And many soundtracks for TV and film.

Still bits I have not got round to using or bothering with. Polar for one.
Most of the time DP pumps audio into an analogue console and away we go from there.
There are many guys using DP. Many "names" if you will.
In the end though it is a tool like paint.
Lots of paint. Not too many Mona Lisa's.
Any help I can give - no problem.
Cheers, Bolla.

I live in Sydney and using traveller& DP for remote recordings...
I have a question for you and I hope you guys can help me...

I own DP 4.61 and wanted to upgrade 5.1 UB version to use it with my macbook...
I soon realised that there is no download option for the upgrade, box version is the only option. So I contacted with the MOTU distributor in Australia and they told me that they didn't have DP5 in their stock yet
:( and not sure when it will be available...
Is anyone in OZ found an another path to upgrade their system? Help will be much appreciated...
