Is there a program to check you are using your whole CPU?

Post by The Sinner »

On one of the boards someone has got me paranoid that I am not running my computer on full strength. Is there a program which can check this out? Analyze what I am running. How much CPU and ram is being used etc....

thanks guys

How about the Activity Monitor? Or, you could use the Istat pro Widget which portrays pretty much the same info in a different GUI. Perhaps I don't understand the question, but how could you not be using the max CPU? Perhaps you are referring to the Energy Saver preference setting under Options, where on some Macs you can set the processor performance to "Highest", "Automatic", or "Reduced".

There was a free utility someone posted a couple of months or more ago that was alleged to not only give a readout of the CPU, but it also measured cycles separately for each processor.

The short answer is "yes".

...now, if only I can find the thread with the link....

greatest thing ever, i use it on all my machines to monitor each cpu (seperate bar for each of your 1/2/4 processors) as well as monitoring ram usage. does nice color bars and graphs over time, all out of the way in the menu bar.

only issue is on small screens, 12" powerbook for example, you might find that your menubar space is at a premium and you don't want to sacrifice it for this purpose. if you run a widescreen 15" monitor or larger, you won't even notice the menubar space used.
