Transfer from DAT to DP goes in red

Post by yofo »

I'm experiencing something strange while trying to transfer from DAT to DP via s/pdif on my 2408. My levels on DPs audio meters are going in the red even though my tascam DAT machine doesn't (and can't) go past "0" The recording never went past 0 and play back doesn't go past 0 , but it goes in the red through a digital transfer !!!

You may want to check your input trims in Cuemix. These should be all the way down for unity gain.

I'm not sure about that, but I've always double-clicked my Cuemix trims until they point at about 10:00. I thought that was unity. It is on analog boards I've used. Good call, though. I'll bet Cuemix is the problem.

There is no trim control in CueMix for digital inputs. The ones and zeros get transferred as-is.

Listen to a transferred file. Does it sound clean? If so there is probably no problem.
You say the "level meter" in DP is going into the red. If you're talking about the top segements in the Audio Monitor Window meters, they don't indicate clipping (that's what the clip meter is for). The top segments of the audio monitor meter shows that the signal is at the top of the sample. I would expect this for mastered audio.

If you listen to the transferred file and hear distortion (that is not on the original master), check your clock settings between the DAT and 2408. Clock source for the 2408 should be S/PDIF input.

I am not sure if they effect signal, but my 1224's do have an input trim on the AES ins in Cuemix.

Oh... sorry. I missed that he was running this in through a digital input. You're right. Trim controls are for analog only.

Different digital meters may be more or less conservative in lighting up the "over" light. The DAT machines meters' over lights may not be calibrated the same as MOTU's. Also, any clipping that was done on the DAT might show overs while recording, but may not show them on playback. Depends on the design of the machine's system. Regardless if it's just a matter of sensitivity in the meters or actual clipping of the DAT-it's too late to do anything about it-although some DeCrackler software will interpolate what it thinks the waveform should be. If you can't hear distortion it's probably not a problem.

Best,

This sounds like a clock sync or sample rate mismatch problem. This happens when my 896 suddenly changes to internal timing when running certain stand alone plugins.
