Driver Install Freezes

Post by stanlogan »

Hi All,

I'm trying to put my studio back together after a LONG hiatus. I have an original 2408 with a PCI324 card. I'm trying to get it installed on a brand new PC, XP SP2 AMD Sempron 1.8GHz, 1.2GB RAM. The problem I'm having is that the driver installs freeze on me. Here's how I've been approaching the install:

1) (original attempt) Ran the latest MOTU installer, (optimistically) chose all 3 drivers, installed, shut down. Install card. Boot. Things look fine, new hardware wizard comes up, I choose Install Automatically, and all but seemingly the very last operation goes well - the progress bar is complete, and it seems to be copying 'ks.sys' or somesuch. Freezes right there.

2) Pretty much the same as the above, except partly following some suggestions from this forum - mainly, trying the Wave driver first, then the ASIO driver. The best I remember, the Wave driver always freezes.

It's late, so my memory is fading of what all I did (probably booted 20 times...). I have just located copies of older driver installs, and I plan to try one of those next. Does anyone have any more suggestions?

Also - I'm short on cash, but if it would solve the problem, I would update my card to the 424. It doesn't seem to me that that would help with my current issue. Does anyone know different?

Please help. Any suggestions appreciated.

(of course, the root of the issue might be that my poor little 324 is ticked off at being installed in a PC, since it spent most of it's life in my last [now painfully obsolete] mac :) )

Thanks in advance,
Stan

Well, I swapped out PCs, and installed the card in a 600MHz eMachines box with Windows 98. Everything seems to be working fine there. (Did a normal install with the latest drivers from MOTU).

I really don't WANT to use that box :).

So, can anyone say whether an upgrade to a 424 will be more likely to be compatible with the new machine? I don't want to drop an extra $300 bucks if I'm going to have the same problems.

Any help is appreciated. (I'm going to try to reach MOTU today to ask them these questions - but I've seen a lot more bad than good about their support. Wish me luck :) )

Thanks,
Stan

This thread may have pertained to your situation. However the link, I had posted, no longer exists. :?

Unfortunately, I know no details of the fix. It was merely information that I recalled seeing elsewhere at that time.

Maybe other participants in that thread, if still around, can recall what the fix entailed.

Good luck with it.

Thanks for the reply. That led me to at least one thread that I hadn't spotted before (I don't understand why I didn't see it in my previous searches...).

I couldn't track down the appleton music link at all - some of the site is in www.archive.org, but not the page with the MOTU info. Sigh.

I've sent an email to MOTU inquiring about a 424 upgrade. If I can be relatively sure it will work, I'll buy one.

Of course, if anyone seeing this thread has more input, please don't hesitate to post :)

Thanks again,
Stan
