Ultralite Firewire unusable.. Plz help!

Post by Kragen »

Hello everybody! :)

I've been trying to make my Ultralite work for some time now. It has the same problems as many others have complained about (LED dancing, noise on all channels, etc.).

I've tried every advice I could find on this forum, including rolling back to SP1 firewire drivers (I tried both the MS hotfix and the RME way). I got a Texas Instruments chipset on my firewire card and I have updated the firmware as well as the Motu drivers. Nothing seems to help...

If anybody outthere knows anything... ANYTHING! - please please please post it here.

Thanks
Rune

Give us a little more step by step detail. Let's break it down a little bit.

Does the unit exhibit problems in "stand alone" mode (not connected to a computer, just used as a mixer.) Try turning the unit on and running some signal through it. Let it warm up. Change the sample rate. All from the front panel. Let's make sure it's not a faulty unit before we start banging on your Windows configuration.

Motu on da phone

Post by Kragen »

Hello again.

I spoke to a Motu technician (for the third time...) after I started this thread. We tried some different things and found out that my UltraLite could work more or less when I rolled the SP2 IEEE drivers back to SP1 manually - the RME-way - IF i reduced my samplerate to 44.1 and set the buffer size to 1024 or 2048. If I set the controls to anything else, the problem comes back.
Now I feel that I'm half-way trough. My UltraLite has sorta proved that it CAN work, more or less, so now I just have to figure out how to regain control of the samplerate and the buffer size.

Although the first problem (with all the noize and the LED dancing) is (more or less) solved, I can't use the UltraLite properly just jet. It seems the UltraLite is not very happy with this configuration (44.1 samplerate and buffersize: 1024/2048) - when I play back audio in Cubase or other similar programs the sound makes a crack about every 10-15 seconds, and pauses for like half a second. This looks like the system is overloaded due to the buffer size - but my computer should be more than fast enough to deal with this.

The UltraLite seems to be working perfectly when I use it as a standalone. Also I think I should mention that this is the 2. unit I have tried. The first one had the same symptoms, which made me think that it had a malfunction - so I returned it and got a new when - that behaved in exactly the same way.

If anybody can come with some ideas or have any thoughts regarding my problem, you are more than welcome!
Thanks to smokey :) - I can only agree that my first post did not tell much about my system. I will try to be more precise the next time!

Have a nice day!

here it is again even a few TI chipset FW cards have the problem.
It is a compatibility issue. get a Belkin F5U503v and your problems will go away. if you need a PCIE card use the SIIG 2 port firewire card.

Check my post at Hardware/LED's go crazy.

Chose to bail out of this unit for a new one. Hope like hell I don't see the same problem. You're scarin' me, man!

I'm not sold on the "TI Chipset" compatibility issue to be honest with you. I had a similar situation when I got my Ultralite. What fixed it was not running a firewire drive AND the ultralite on the same 1394 bus. (note the difference between the words 'port' and 'bus')

I'd recommend that if you are using an external drive.

like i said there are a few TI chipset cards that still do not work so a TI chipset does not guarantee success. i have tried about 5 FW cards with 2 brand new Ultralite's and have found that when you have bouncing meters and distorted sound unless the volume is extremely low and 88.2 and 96khz work then it IS the FW card.

the Adaptec Fireconnect i tried did have a TI chipset and had the same issues.

Also if he had a FW drive hooked up i am sure he would have tried using the ultralite without it plugged in.

It IS your card go get a belkin card and you will see.

motu ultralite amazement

Post by the_grungy »

i have had similar problems, got the motu ultralite 2 days ago and i cant get it to record without it spazzing out with clicks, pops and a weird buzzing sound. ive tried "everything", even unplugging all my USB devices to see if that was the problem as they're right next to the firewire socket on my board.
im using a p4 EE, 2GB machine with onboard firewire sockets. sp2, with the firewire driver RME patch. the unit works fine on its own. its almost as if it suffers from picking up different signals....much like an amp does with a mobile phone signal.
for the few seconds that i HAVE got it to record, it also records the bloody clicktrack. my ignorance procedes me, i'm not sure if that has something to do with the problem, but im going to send this piece of....back, if the situation doesn't change. for £400, no product should not be suffering from issues such as this and as ive read, its not just me either. feels like it should cost £50 at max!!
the people on this forum have been very informative, i hope someone notices me enough to solve my problem!

thank you.
