Fender Pro Junior

Post by gearboy »

I just have to express my joy concerning my latest purchase. This little amp is simply amazing. My Epi Elitist Les Paul sounds HUGE through this amp and an 808 modded TS-9. I can't believe it.

This is not the amp for you if you are after a super clean Fender sound. It breaks up after 5 and sounds like Neil Young heaven. Two knobs, Volume and tone. And it has both.

Best of all: it cost me $239 with the 20% off coupon that I had for GC. Usually it goes for $300.

Combine it with a 1960s or early 1970s Princeton Reverb and your studio with thank you. That'll cover a ton of tones.

I can't wait to hear it with the tubes that I just ordered for it from JJ's.

Just thought that I would pass on the good word.

Thanks for the good information. Question: I'm an acoustic guitarist who is looking to dip my feet in the waters of the electric guitar. I've been looking at perhaps buying a used Les Paul Double Cut, but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on your Epiphone.

The Elitist series of instruments from Epi are on par or better than their Gibson cousins. They are crafted in Japan and their hardware and pickups are USA Gibson. I just had mine in to a very reputable repair guy for a setup and string gauge change (.11s) and he told me that my Les Paul Standard Plus was one of the best Les Pauls that he's ever played. Seriously, check them out. Amazing guitars. The SGs that they used to make under the Elitist name were absolutely amazing. Ashame that they are discontinued. Ebay, I guess.

Mine is stock and it's staying that way. They are not nitro-cellulose laquered, their maple cap is only 1/8" instead of 1/4" (slightly darker), and the pickups are basically 490/498T (Gibson rep told me that). I've toured the Gibson Nashville plant and played some incredible guitars, including the JP Les Paul that Jimmy Page approved for production (#5, btw), as well as an original 1959 Les Paul and the Custom shop reissues. Mine is definitely up there in sound, playability, and looks. The Gibsons are nice as well, and someday I'd love to own one, but for now I can't complain. I really love my Paul.

Give them a test drive. Definitely way better and a totally different animal than the normal Epi Les Pauls.

I also have a Korean-made Sheraton II that's quite nice, though I am going to upgrade the pups and all electronics in the coming months. Plays great though.

Funny, but I've always been a strat/tele guy. Now my Les Paul is my favorite guitar.

I have tried the Fender Blues Junior a few times and was impressed with the sound - is that similar to the Pro Jr.?

I have an old (1970s era) Fender Pro Reverb amp (essentially a Twin, but 50 watt instead of 100). That thing sounds delicious.

Pro Jr and Blues Junior are completely different beasts. Pro Jr breaks up like a class A amp. Blues Junior is more of a clean amp that kind of breaks up. Oh, and it has reverb that folks say sounds kind of crappy.

Cool - thanks for the info. Now that I think about it, I only played the Blues Junior clean. You have me interested in the Pro Junior now.

I manage a guitar store in the Nashville area and one day Jimmy Page walks in and says he had a guitar stolen a while back in another city (and we buy and sell vintage guitars) so he was just checking if perhaps the thief had brought it in and sold it to us. Well we didn't have his guitar but as he strolled through the store he picked up a new Jimmy Page Les Paul that we had for sale (not the one he was looking for) , he played it for a short while and puts it down and says " that guitar's a piece of crap" and then he left.
