Is it time to leave the tower behind?

Post by KarlSutton »

Hi there,

I have a love/hate relationship with my g5 dual1.8. It has been plenty powerful enough for my needs but I am tired of the noise and heat it generates. I don't have any PCI cards but I do have 4 firewire drives & two firewire interfaces. I don't use everything simultaneously though. I also have 4GB RAM. I'm toying with the idea of going Macbook Pro to replace the tower. Am I crazy? I know the tower has greater expandability, but I'm going to have to shell out some dough to either house this thing in some kind of iso box, or buy extendits & put it in another room (which really isn't too feasable).

How have some of you laptop users felt about only 2GB RAM?
This is of course assuming DP & Mach5 are binary when I do this.

I would love any insight or advice you guys might have. Thanks. Karl

I also have a dual 1.8 and it is quite noisey too.

I can't figure out if it's always been this noisey but it just SEEMED quieter when I first got it compared to what I had been using: a G4 (that thing was really noisey!).

OR

If my G5 has actually got more noisey over the year and a half I've had it?

Sometimes the G5 fans get really quite whiny and a lot louder - and I have A/C in my studio so it is generally the same temp.

I have been wondering if I should try replacing the fan units, or maybe just the big CPU one that you can pull out.... has anyone ever done this to cure a noisey G5?

think there is a chip controlling the fan- i had siniliar prob a month ago - seemed the fan was always on high

unplugging the actually power cable for 15- 20 secs seemed to solve it

is it the same problem?

there are so may threads about the noisy 1.8's on the apple site & I've never found a solution. I have Apple Care & I'd like to figure out a way to get this thing quiet. Because it was quiet when I first got it. I guess I could try to live with it until the intel towers come out but I don't want to shell out the cash for one of those & have the same problem.
