I'm an idiot

Post by ColdPack »

So, last night I posted a new topic. Then deleted. That's because I'm an idiot.

I couldn't -- for the life of me -- get any sound to come through my new UltraLite on Audio Ins 3 and 4. I tried "everything". Hours I worked on this. I posted the question here. I pulled my hair out.... chewed my nails to the quick...

Then, while putting my daughter to sleep, it hit me.

What I thought was plugged into Audio Ins 3 and 4 was actually plugged into Audio Out 3 and 4.

Wow.

I'm an idiot. Just thought I'd share. :)

Not too long ago I sold a friend my old 2408 setup. I installed it, loaded the drivers and set up Acid to use the card for audio and sent her on her way.

I got a call that night that the 2408 was broken. Towards the end of that conversation I asked her to verify the 2408 was at least showing up in the MOTU console. It wasn't so I asked her to check that the audiowire cable was plugged in securely. You see where this is going, don't you? . . . She had to go and find the cable which was still in the box I had packed everything in for her. Plug it in and it works. Amazing!

Have you ever been in arena setting up for a large concert and for the life you of you can't figure out why NO vocals are coming through, only to have someone else realize an hour later the wireless mics didn't have batteries put in them?? Yeah, I lost a lot of face that night :-)
Thank you,

Hey Brad... takes a big man to admit it. We've ALL done these things... it's the human condition. What is cool is that ColdPack actually deleted the thread and admitted something that all of us have done at one time or another. Granted people have real problems out there, but I sometimes wonder how many threads just sit there, leaving people to assume a piece of gear is buggy, etc., when the poster never followed up.

I know I've been guilty of calling up tech support on something or other and being convinced something was wrong with their product and then discovered later it was "operator error." To err is human... but it's good to be human. :-)

I think perhaps this thread should be confessional for all of us who have had "brain farts" at gigs, etc. :-)

I am a very experienced and (somewhat!) well-respected recording and mixing engineer, and have been for quite some time!!

A year or two ago I was involved in the filming, recording , mixing and authoring of a concert DVD, complete with many extras, for a great friend of mine who was doing an anniversary concert in London. All went very well.

We recorded many interviews of the artist, band, fans, and people who had been involved historically with the artist. I helped with the filming and did the sound for these interviews.

As I had worked on many albums with the artist, I had to be interviewed for the documentary as well. I was a tad shy and nervous, and knew I would only have one shot at getting it right. I decided to hand hold the mic just out of shot.

I did my bit and was really pleased I had managed to come up with a few anecdotes without too much fuss. Imagine how mortified I was to discover that I had been holding the AKG3000 THE WRONG WAY UP!! and had a really quiet, muffled, indistinct and roomy recording...... what a tosser!!!!

I did quite a restoration job on that one, I can tell you!!!!!

Since this is the fess up thread, I guess I'll list some of mine too:

Once I went on stage with no rosin on a bow. For those of you not familiar with fiddles, the result is similar to striking a chord and finding out you're wearing mittens. Thank goodness some guy I've never seen before or since ran over with a prepped bow. Where he got it from, I have no idea. But thanks, whoever you are!

Oh, and the software CD I couldn't get to work no matter what I tried. it would either show up as empty, or be ejected by the system -- even after rebooting! Calling the company angrily for sending me a dud CD, they wanted me to read the numbers on the CD. So I opened the CD tray, and removed the CD, and found out that there was another blank CD in the tray...

I did something similar just the other day.
I could not get any input from one of my Mic Pres, I tried both channels, I tried several Mics and cables...still no signal....

I had plugged the mics into the the dedicated XLR Line inputs on the pre instead of the XLR Mic inputs...I wish I could have those 2 hours of my life back......

Neverending story. LOL

No Power from the PA only to realize I forgot to plug the XLR's into the output from the board.

Or Dang, this compressor sucks man I dont hear anything, only to realize I forgot to hit the insert button on the console.

Yep we all have had those days.

How about you do sound check and here comes show time. Dang why are my vocals so out of control.....Only to look over at the comp and realize. Oops, Guess I should flip the bypass button. LOL.

Welcome to oops city. Lots of veteran oopers here.
