HELP! Death Screen

Post by Timmy S »

I am in the middle of mixing a major project in DP 4.6. For the last few years of tracking and recording it has been nearly flawless. Now in the middle of mixing ( about every 15 minutes ) that macbre screen descends and hangs on a half lit screen with some forein font on it, and needs to be restarted. Also I have noticed that my mouse is intermittent and needs to be disconnected and plugged in to the usb jack to work again. I have repeaired permissions and dried disk utility to no avail. Another hardrive I have in this dual 2 Gig G5 died recently and I removed it, don't know if that's releated.
Any advice or suggestion to try would be much appreciated. I have tried many different files and it happens in all of them.

thanks,
Tim

Hmm, I wonder if it's a motherboard thing, given the USB problem. It definitely sounds like a hardware issue of some kind. Death screens usually mean that (with defective RAM being the most likely culprit, though perhaps not in your case).

Can you get a copy of Tech Tools and run a diagnostic? Might give you some insight.

In the meantime, do backup everything you can.

Sounds like a kernel panic, which are often related to bad RAM (not always, but a lot on OSX which is fussy about the RAM quality).

Does it look like this?

I have noticed that it seems to only happen in DP and not other Apps.

If that multi-language screen is indicative of a hardware problem and it only happens in DP, then maybe it's the A/D/A interface.

Call me at home; I'll loan you one of my interfaces if you want to test that.

You still have my number, right? (I can't find yours right now.)

Just FYI, kernel panics are not always caused by hardware problems, though they can be. But they can be software-related as well.

(They were for me some 18 months ago. A complete reformat and fresh install of the startup drive fixed my problems completely.)

Good luck!
