dualcore 2.0 - alert spikes on cpu

Post by endso »

Hi there, got a brand new g5 dualcore 2.0 with 2 internal maxtor 250Gb HDs. DP 4.61 motu 896HD.
DP and other apps run from the system HD while sound libraries (VIs) and projects are on the second HD.
buffer 256
10-12 mono tracks playing back (1 only reverb in the aux drum submix) while I'm recording a VI (b4II) the cpu is already over 50%... as I play back together with the just recorded VI too, sometimes red cpu spikes appears together with the alert window something like "playback overloaded..." and 3 buttons (disable, cancel and continue). After, this does not happen again keepin on playing back but the cpu usage is almost 50% anyways.
I've read on other threads here and I unchecked the automatic beat detection and the analyze files as soon as possible boxes but with little improvements... I'm coming to g5 from an old iMac g3 and I frankly expected (still expect) a much better performance from such a powerful machine... when I record the VI i create all in all 4 tracks: the VI instrument track, the MIDI track, one aux track and one audio stereo track to record the VI directly on an audio track...
is this behaviour normal? any suggestion? thanks

new external FW HD - problem solved!!!

Post by endso »

I solved the problem: additional FW800 250Gb external HD.
I put sounds and samples on the HD so that now the second internal drive is dedicated to dp projects.
everything works just fine now!
