DP 4.52 & Tiger = big joke ?

Post by fabtranzer »

Howdy !

Here I am with my new iMac 2.0 1G Ram and 10.4.1 and D.P 4.52 and guess what , I start missing my old iBook with 9.2 and Dp 2.72 !

Keep having all sorts of crashes, audio noises, CPU clips, and the latest one is that my Apogee Mini Me doesn t work anymore on the iMac ( records big black squares and plays back insane white noise ) ...needless to say that the Mini Me works flawlessly on the iBook of course...have switched back for now as I m in the middle of a project and of course it s always when you really need it to work that it stops working...

What drives me a bit nuts is that I can t even install 9.2 and Dp 2.72 on the Imac ..installation of D.P 2.72 crashes !

Any input would be greatly appreciated !

Thanks a lot

From the moment I installed Tiger, EVERYTHING started working better and responded much more efficiently.
Some things to try..........first of all, go to your disk utility app (located in Applications>Utilities folder and select you boot drive and REPAIR PERMISSIONS, This should actually be done after installing anything in OS!
You might need to zap your PRAM (hold command-option-P-R upon startup or restart and let the startup chord play 2 or 3 times then let up on the keys and let the computer finish starting up). The PRAM thing should not be neccesary very often, but it has helped me in the past when all else failed. It simply resets the initial perameters of the computer..............these parameters can, on occasion become corrupted and doing this procedure will not ruin anything. The only thing is if you keep any comments in the "Get Info" , but I think most of us probably do not.
Anyway, this should all work. Tiger is very stable with DP..........IMHO much more than Panther.

Check to make sure you have the most up to date drivers for your audio interface.

What type of Buffer Size settings are you guys using ?
Host Buffer Multiplier ?
Work priority ?

What about disk read/write size and buffer per voice ?

My system is running again, it was a conflict between the Mac Audio MIDI setup menu and the hardware setup in DP , one was setting the audio input at 16bits instead of 24 while the other was set at 24...

Thank you !

Are the new iMacs dual-booting? I doubt it. In fact I wouldn't recommend trying it. Looks like the only machine you can run 2.72 on is the iBook. Audio apps don't work in Classic mode.

...I'm actually getting a little tired of people comparing OS9 to OSX. Yes, it was faster for DP and many other apps, but it's history. Time to move on. The sooner you get it out of your world the better.

Yes Dix,
you re right, OS 9 is the past and it s time to move on, as Apple doesn t seem to leave us the choice anyway.
Shame Dp 2.7 doesnt run on classic on a G5, it would fly !!!

It s frustrating that a G5 doesn t even provide the level of flawless user experience that an old G3 under 9.2 and DP 2.7 was giving more than five years ago .

Sure, everybody in the audio field is tired of still having to compare 9.2 with X..

For writing emails and for messing around with the dorky iLife , Os X is of course better...for recording music in a fast and reliable way, I m still not so sure...

oh, I am. I'm far more productive in OSX. I can render to disk, surf the web, upload to ftp, burn a cd and more all at the same time. The advantages go on and on. Plus, PLUS DP virtually doesn't crash. I've had maybe two bona-fide crashes since last November. And of course no restarts because of DP. A crash a day was par for the course in OS9. I say good riddance to OS9.

Not surprised to hear that people don't miss OS9. I still have 9 installed on a couple of old G3s here at home; I much prefer X. But DP 2.72 was as stable and reliable as any piece of audio software I've ever encountered.

I guess there are always going to be specific matchups of OS and app that are more reliable than others, and apparantly DP 2.72(?) with OS 9 was one of those. I started with DP 3 on OS 9, and it crashed constantly. I have primarily seen incremental improvements with DP4.x and OS X, and have found that if anything breaks MOTU is very quick to fix it.

I just upgraded to Tiger a couple of weeks ago and noticed the biggest improvement ever. I am running an 800 MHz iMac G4 with 384 Mb RAM (which I plan to upgrade to 1 Gb very soon).

The only problem I've had is probably a personal bookkeeping problem due to being in so many bands/projwects and having so many DP projects that I hadn't even opened since DP 3.1 with OS 9: some of my audio files are missing. Usually the previous take or undo action gets me to a usable audio file, but since I haven't had time to go through several hundred DP projects one by one, I am a bit curious about whether there is a danger in not opening and resaving all of your DP projects after major upgrades -- especially dual upgrades such as DP 4.52 and Mc OS X 10.4 Tiger.
