Beat you to the punch by one post (see above)! Sadly ... no matter how much bitching I do about it, I'm fairly certain it'll less likely be a year before jumping to 7 and more like "the next time I have $200 to spare". In fact, the only things I'll be watching for beforehand are which plugs do and don't work with it, whether or not they fixed up pre-rendering and what kind of support and development I can expect to see. It's still a bitter pill to swallow, and it still makes me extremely nervous to take the plunge and possibly see this all play out again next year. Sigh.
One thing I am curious about: the in-line EQ. In old software like Vision DSP, the built in Q comes at the end of the chain, right before the pan and fader. Which means it comes after the effects inserts. Which means, if you put a compressor on an insert, your Q comes after your compressor. I'm wondering if DP 7 will allow you to move the inline Q up or down (kind of like the pre or post dot in all previous versions) so that it comes before your inserts. I'd rather be able to use my own compressor plugs than the in-line dynamics, and I'd rather take advantage of in-line EQ than stick a Q plug before the compressor. Still, since all I primary use Q for anyway is to cut low end EQ, it'll be mighty handy for everything not requiring a compressor.

I am just mystified by all the DP6 bashing. The program has been ROCK solid for me and I am running a TON of AUs with no problems, doing large orchestral pieces with LASS, Vienna, and East/West. Not a hiccup!

Ha , your UPS driver will drag your copy of DeeP 7 across your lawn in a zig zag fashion to the point that it looks like the DeeP 7 splash screen.
So did yuo get a new machine yet?

No one mentioned the work done to support multi-threading and multi-processor operation improvements offered in SL. That work may be worth at least some of the upgrade cost for most people. Grand Central Dispatch seems to be considered a major component of SL, and it's good to see MOTU taking advantage of it as soon as possible.

OK, rub it in, rub it in! He'll probably run it across some doggy poo before it's over! Speaking of which, I wish Nicky was here to join the party. LOL
I am trying to put off buying my new machines and interfaces until my summer 2010 commissions are confirmed. The producer will be (supposedly) buying me machines to create and run the show, including a new audio interface for the surround sound, Mac Pro and Mac Book Pro. Once the show closes, the machines are part of my fee. Sweet. Work is supposed to start after the first of the year so I think I can hold out until then and let someone else pay the +$3k for hardware. If I run into problems before then I can try it on wifey's Intel Macbook.
I won the G5 in a drawing from Macworld around 2003, so I haven't spent a dime on studio Mac hardware since then. If I can get someone else to buy my next set of hardware, I'll be a happy camper. Not that I don't give them my heart and soul. My liver, however, belongs to PatrĂ³n. <hic>

I know that for me, much of the Leopard issue was on the particular combination of PPC Macs running Leopard with certain Native Instruments VIs. Ever since I got Komplete 5 and the newer Kontakt I'm back on Leopard.

Wow! DP7!!

Honestly I'm not impressed with the new features and I really don't care too much about them . I only wish that DP7 is solid and more stable than DP6.02 (that has been a little of a head heck for me lately...too many crashes). So if DP7 fixes some bugs , is stable and has what it says it has, for me is more than fine.
Keep going MOTU!!!

I love market competition. It's good for us. DP7 takes it to a whole new level. And nobody saw this coming...
MOTU Bravo. DP is obviously a great DAW and getting better all the time and is already a cut above the competition. What great vision motu has to make DP happening for guitar players with value added amps and FX.
Thanks Motu for the new Quickscribe functions now I won't have to run to Sibelius to do charts. DP has conquered the film score and set its sights on pop music producers. By the way DP 6.02 and OSX 10.6 S.L. are rock solid...
DP is just a great environment to make music.

That makes sense! It always seemed to me that it was odd combos of things that caused problems, not simply the OS.
I wouldn't mind upgrading to Snow Leopard, but again, it's paranoia -- I'd hate to have to pay to upgrade a multitude of plugs that seem to be running fine in Tiger and DP's 5 and 6, especially on the tail of paying to upgrade to Snow Leopard and DP 7.

I don't think it's bashing DP 6, per se, so much as being upset that 6 didn't really get developed, we were all led to believe more updates were forthcoming that would address issues, tech support has been sketchy at best and now, here's a brand-new version we have to pay for and possibly worry about. With what seems like limited (and loud) exceptions, I think most people can run DP 6 and work with it just fine, but there are still lingering problems, big for some people, small for others -- stuff that usually gets addressed in maintenance updates and the like. My biggest concern with 7 is that it will be summarily treated like 6, and $390 is a lot of money to pay for two upgrades in a row that "kind of" work. I certainly hope I'm wrong and that this puts MOTU back on track.

Back up the way somewhere in this thread, I left a post about the new features. I started reading all about features on
this page and soon began to realize that DP -- which seemed complete to me in 2000 -- has added dozens of features since then. It's very extensive now. The feature set is almost embarrassingly rich, and yet a few people still are irrationally biased against DP, as though it isn't capable of doing anything. (I'm not referring to this thread; just the general comments of the past few weeks or even years)
I challenge someone to count the features added since DP 4.0 in May, 2003. That's just over 6 years ago. I use quite a few of those features now, and wouldn't want to be without them. While it's true that some of the original MAS plugins from the mid-1990s are getting a little long in the tooth, they still do what they do. They're not particularly bad plugins, but just very basic. Then there are the new breed of plugins like Masterworks EQ. These are to be proud of. They're some of the finest in the business. Masterworks Leveler is another, and is one that takes some understanding to get the most out of it, but in the hands of one who knows how it works, it's like having the real thing.
I'm not going to relist them all here. If anyone wants to see the overwhelming numbers of features that go beyond the basic usage of DP, read the MOTU page in the link. Go through each of the links on the sidebar. I think you'll be overwhelmed. DP has grown up. Some might even say it's too big, but I don't see that. The things I don't use never get in my way, so what's wrong with having them there?
Just amazed at the app. And I was amazed 10 years ago, and 10 years before that. DP is really an incredible music/audio workstation.

Three comments:
1) I wish MOTU would make system compatibility requirements easier to find. I finally gave up, but presumed the marketing hype of Leo/SL meant no Tiger support.
2) I'm still on PPC running Tiger, heard Leo runs poorly on my platform and can't upgrade to SL. So, I'll be staying here on my little 6.02 island while you, Gilligan, MaryAnn and Ginger sail off to civilization.
3) I read the features list and am relieved there is very little there that interests me. Amp sims are against my religion (the church of high-volume reamping) and most of the other stuff I can certainly live without.
Am I disappointed? Not at all. My intention was to establish a firm, reliable platform to use for the foreseeable future until I upgrade hardware. Yes 6.02 strains my 5 year old machine a bit and crashes from time to time, but all in all, it meets or exceeds my operational requirements. I hope y'all love DP 7 and hope to hear great things about your experiences.

Well don't you dare do it! We'd have to start a new section - but what to call it?

I kind of like the last one. Sounds a bit musical and like returning to the last tempo, harks back to the last version of DP.

BTW--- I'm so glad this thread made the EQ Mag thread go away.

Positive is so much nicer than that other thing.
I know, don't say it!

From what I can discern fro the screen shots, etc., I was right and MOTU ported the rest of their third-gen hardware FX over for the in-line dynamics and EQ. Which begs the question: when are they gonna start implementing the actual hardware FX as "powered plugs"?
Shooshie, it's also a reflection of the types of computers available today. I remember being blown away back in 1990 because the Atari and Amiga home computers had these dinky monophonic "synthesizer" applications you could actually trigger from a MIDI keyboard. Of course, they sounded terrible, even then, but it definitely made me wonder if/when computers would get powerful enough that you could use them as "virtual keyboards". I never in a million years envisioned the day I'd have a virtual M-1 and other assorted spot-on classic synth emulations, 24-bit samplers and just about every type of synthesis-generating virtual instrument on a dinky Mac laptop, running inside of a program that played back locked full-frame video you could score to without a VCR, a SMPTE-to-MIDI converter or even MIDI as we knew it ten years ago. I don't even have a hardware sound-generating keyboard in my rig anymore!
Whether we're completely happy with MOTU or not, a lot changed in a short period of time, and, to keep at the forefront of things, they've had to do a lot of rethinking in terms of design and features. I certainly understand the thinking that went into DP 6 and 7: win over customers or die. The problem is, now Logic will throw sixty new things into the mix to look sexier, then Cubase will do it, then it'll be back to MOTU to outgun them with something else. I'd rather MOTU focused on doing all the stuff that made them great, than keep adding things because the other guys are. However, I will be the first to admit that, for the most part, DP 7's new features are a lot of things people have often scratched their heads over and said "Why doesn't DP do this ...?!?"
