Suggestions for next DP update

I would like DP to go iLok! Protect our investments. I have all the MOTU VI plugs Electric Keys, MSI, Ethno, MachV and all of them are iLok!

Also, instead of stripped down libraries, maybe 1 really awesome Piano/B3 and a nice String Patch or 2.

.

Either iLok or eLicenser. I don't know if this is true, but I heard iLok-protected stuff gets cracked much sooner. Perhaps it was eLicenser who said that, though

I'm sorry for being dense here, but why would you guys want to put DP under an iLok? I love the way DP has been doing it all these years- you install from the CD and after you install you run it once with the CD in the drive and boom... you're good to go. Why add an iLok which, if it decides to fail on you, could ruin your work flow on a particular busy day of work. If you think that iLok's stop piracy, you haven't heard about all the recent pirated plugs that are iLok. Why do you think PSP is removing iLok as a copy protection scheme for there newest versions of their plug-ins? iLok has been cracked. The bottom line is if you want to be an ethical, honest person and get updates to your software you have to buy it. You're never going to stop thieves if they want this stuff, so just do the right thing, but c'mon, I already have too much stuff on an iLok and I have had problems in the past with them flaking out.
Again, just my 2 cents! :D

+1

I like DP's copy protection as-is. If they go to a dongle like ilok then DP will actually stick out like a sore thumb compared to many of the other major DAWs that have no such requirements. I personally think that it would hurt them more than help them and wouldn't actually prevent piracy.

OK, Frank. The way you expertly proofed my orchestrations in the past (the guy is a master, btw) you focus my post. What I would like MOTU to come up with an is an iron clad protection scheme. At least I think that's what I want... :) Then again hunting pirates is such a morbidly enjoyable pursuit, if DP was ultimately protectable, I might have too much time on my hands. I really don't care if it's iLok or whatever. Just something to keep the thieves at bay.

They'd crack that in a NY second! The only cp that works is tying the app to a hardware DSP card or having the actual installer disc. The only attribute to ilok is using the plugs on multiple computers... but isn't that going against the grain? If I use UAD, I have to buy DSP cards for every computer to run it on. It seems then, if I have multiple installations and doing these things I MUST be making $$ (if your not, you'd better change your game) so what's wrong with buying another license?

Thanks for the kind words, MLC! I know what you mean, but that's the thing; I don't think there really is any foolproof way to stop piracy. The iLok was supposed to be the deal, but it's been cracked- it just seems that this is like one of those things that you either get or you don't- maybe it's how people were brought up- if their parents were ethical then they would have an idea of how to be in the world, and how to treat others, but as long as there's going to be software, it will probably eventually be crackable and therefore the point is, do you want this company to keep making this amazing software or just give up because they can't make a living from it. It just seems that sometimes all this copy protection stuff just becomes a PITA for the people who actually pay for the software and are using it legally, while the scammers and thieves get off scot-free.
My main thought is that the big fat beautiful manual is the best copy protection that MOTU has, because I can't imagine anyone really getting that deep into DP without it!

I like the way DP authorizes.

I agree with frankymax that this all comes down to ethics.
My personal policy is to only use software that I have paid for.
My theory is that the developers should be compensated for their hard work.
This encourages more development and great new stuff.
There is the added benefit of direct communication with the developer.
Input about possible new features, bug fixes etc.

I do like the iLok for convenience when I switch machines, but I don't want to see DP go there.

Well, I agree with all the points about the piracy problem etc and I'm also for a strong protection schema, BUT Motu needs to do something about the current one in my opinion. Either fix it or switch to something that's more user friendly.

It took me more than one day of googling support calls etc to get my LEGAL copy of DP 7 authorized. And that's hard to swallow after having payed hard earned money for it.

(BTW: I like DP, it's the best DAW for my needs out there, screw Logic;-))

Yes, but DP switching to iLock protection would mean switching help file to pdf format!!! Hackers will love it...

Right now, I'm fine with the big DP black book.

• buffer setting displayed visibly all time.

• fix the stuck notes problem

Yes, yes yes. please!!!! How many times have you opened the "Configure Hardware Driver" Menu only to find out that the buffer setting is already where you want it to be and then have to wait for all of the VIs to reload when you hit cancel?
It is very simple to see and change the clock source, sample rate, bit rate and frame rate right on the control pannel. Why not add a buffer size setting on the control pannel?

OK, so for all you iLok haters I concede. Good points:) I love my Bible of a Manual!!! I don't ever want to lose that awesome manual. It makes me feel like I'm getting my money's worth at the start!

How bout if DP 8 recognizes when you have been working too long and orders a Pizza for you in mid-session. But then folks would blame MOTU because Pizza Hut screwed up your customized toppings:)
