cp is the copy operation under unix..
"extended attributes" is what unix usually can't handle (or have trouble with)

FYI: Finder doesn't use cp for copying and it does support extended attributes. Actually it comes from older Mac OS and is totally unfitted for large data transfers. I would also recommend using a dedicated backup software.

Jupp, you're right (that's why I asked what was used to copy).. But the ones' I was thinking of are the ones' you can set in windows / active directory.. And as far as I know, you can get in situations that are similar to these.. Or, have they fixed that ?

You may find this difficult to believe but up until one of the Panther updates (10.3.4?) Apple were unable to guarantee the integrity of Finder copies in OS X.

Finder is an insecure and perpetually buggy anachronism that should be consigned to the dustbin of history. You can blame the Mac-OS-9-forever weenies for its inclusion in OS X instead of the far superior NeXT FileViewer.

Thanks guys. I will definitely do this. I have been thinking about it for years, and then just doing it the hard way. It is high time that I set myself with a much more painless backup system! :-)

I'm not familiar with the NeXT FileViewer, but I don't doubt there are more efficient ways of handling files. Perhaps it will show up in a future version of the OS?

Incidentally, the movie shows just what Mac users could have been using instead of that clunker Mac OS 8 had John Sculley not been successful in ousting Jobs and setting us back at least 10 years.

Thanks Dave. I actually watched the full video, and was surprised to see all of those OSX features already in NeXt computers back in 1993. We really did get set back, didn't we?

Fortunately, with Apple's acquisition of NeXt in 1997, we ended up getting all that stuff... all that and more. I didn't notice anything specific about the FileViewer, however. And I didn't see anything different with regards to how files are handled.

Since when does YouTube allow you to post 35 minute videos? I thought the limit was 10 minutes or less. :?:

I've not used Personal Backup, but I highly recommend Chronosync. It works very well, is really easy to use, has a lot of deeper features if you need them, and comes for a one-time license fee of $30. In other words, all updates are free.

I have another positive to add for the 10.4.10 update, in terms of 10.4.9 anomalies that have now gone away:

Vienna Instruments no longer slams to 192kHz sample rate and no longer crashes when I use it in DP as a plug-in.

The 192kHz problem still happens when running it in standalone mode though, so I no longer consider the RME Fireface 800 to be the likely cause of the problem (I set the Fireface to be clock master with DDS Active, so still don't know how the sample rate could go to 192 kHz in AMS and be out of sync with the main audio interface).

I expect to be using Altiverb later today for the first time since my 10.4.10 upgrade, and will report back if it too has improved in reliability (I had to quarrantine either the MAS version or the AU version earlier, but I now forget which one, and don't really care unless the problem persists).

I may try yet another fresh install of the Powercore Firewire driver again too on the off-chance that my PoCo FW unit starts working again.

Just FYI, Altiverb under MAS has been among those plugins which has worked amazingly well under 10.4.10.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1. I am really surprised to hear that you had to quarrantine MAS or AU and would be interested in reading your next report on this.

The only issue I've had is with opening A-verb 5 projects in v6 where parameters don't load, but I've not tried to port over my A-verb 5 projects from the G5 to the MacPro in total. With the exception of one or two projects, everything being done on the MacPro originated there, so it's not a problem.... yet.

To get back on track...

I'm having problems again with crashes. Also things in DP are changing around graphics mouse control with 5.12 since OSX 10.4.10. I'm starting to think that Apple has tilted the OS towards intel machines and is leaving PPC in the dust.

Anyone else?

Good point! Aren't these updates really about Intel Macs anyway?

I think it's more of a case of fixing things for Intel Macs, and just not paying attention to PPC macs - i.e., not an overt "anti-PPC" attitude. Just negligent.

I think we're all in for a very unsettled time - with Leopard "still" coming "soon", the continuing Waves problems, still no updates for many VI's like Spectrasonics, the continuing NI problems, probably another DP update by the end of the year, major problems with Quicktime and Safari - I'd say as long as your system is stable, just don';t upgrade anything for the next four to five months, at least.

Here's a problem that I've run into having loaded 5.12.

Under previous versions of DP it was possible to route several busses through to a surround output (I use this all the time for bouncing two stereo stems to a single "overlapping" quad file). It would appear that under 5.12 no audio passes through busses unless there is a 1:1 correlation between the bundle types, hence making this "mix and match" operation impossible - i.e. a stereo bundle will only route audio through to another stereo bundle with the exact same channel layout.

This means a complete change of workflow for me or a reversion to 5.11...

Thanks again blue. I purchased Chronosync and have started using it. It is going to save me incredible amounts of time from now onwards. Backups, and incremental backups are going to be a breeze.
