Woohoo!! You GO, girl!!
Have fun with that monster, even if it's going to take a bit to get everything situated the way it was on your G5.
I'm jealous!

Good for you, RG!

When I made the complete transition (couldn't salvage the G4-motherboard died) to the Quad Core a year and a half ago, it took me about 2 weeks to get back to where I was with software updates (VIs, plugs, etc.) and apps and installing and configuring two new internal drives (no jumpers, just moving files).

I made a list of what needed to be checked or updated and it ended up being about 25 items.

In the end...worth it!

Thanks for the hurrays and applauses :)
Well right now I installed from the DP 7.0 disc..that was hidden deep down somewhere as these DP 7 install CDs never came in a box.. Got a lill worried there, but finally I found it! Phew!

I testdrove a 24 track audio project right after installing.. Wow, it loaded real fast!

I supose one has to install all the updates, one by one.. I saved them so that´s no problem :) I´m right on it! 6 updates and than add the new 7.23 to the final installation.

...repair permissions...repair permissions...repair permissions...repair permissions...repair permissions...repair permissions...repair permissions...repair permissions

update.. Installed DP up to date 7.23. Even Andys GUIs are installed :)
And installed the key bindings and fixed my Window Sets.. Phew. I feel like home now :)

Opened the BIGGEST project that usually puts the G5 down on its knees!

OMG! .... unbeliiiievable...
This machine is in a HURRY!!!! :woohoo:

Even installed Liquid Mix without any problems, and the AMT8/Unitor MIDI interface is working too. I thought I would have to give these up in SL.. but nope. It´s rocking and rolling :)
I´ll go on tomorrow with everything else..

Sounds great!
I don't think you need to install every DP update though. When I reinstalled I took care to go through as FEW steps as possible, and it works great.
Also repairing permissions after every install is a huge waste of time in my opinion. I very rarely do it. And very rarely have any issues.
But whatever voodoo floats your boat... ;-)

I really need a new machine too. But hoping a 64bit DP and 64 bit PLAY will give it some more life as I'm dead broke right now anyway ;-)

Onyx is a god-like application. Run the automation (scripts, permissions, caches, logs, etc.). I do this once a month. No problems.

Hi RG,
I am glad you are making progress.

I have few questions regarding Liquid Mix........are you using a separate fw buss for LM? if you got a card, which one?
I got LM32 a few years back when they was a deal and never tried or used it with my old G5,it's still in the box lol.
I assume you still need to have it on it's own fw bus... ...many users love this card but I have heard it could bring a Mac to it's knees ,unless it had it's own fw bus,is this still true?
I am tempted to try it but I don't want to add anything that makes my newer DAW unstable......
Thanks
KG

Hi Hammerman,
I have wanted to try Onyx as it has a very good reputation but they give you many choices for routines to use, which do you recommend and which do you suggest to avoid???

Thanks

Gee, than you will be surprised when finally using it. I like the LM a lot and use it from time to time. I would have been very sad if it couldn´t move with me to the new Snow Leopard Mac Pro.
It has a FW 800 connection cable and I had one FW800 port on my G5.
I got 4 of them now on the new Mac Pro.
Download the new driver from Focusrites home page. No need to worry. Everything will be fine :)

Day 3: Still installing. DP 7.23 running and most plugins are done. Waves, Nomad, sonnox, SoundToys etc. Glad I saved all emails with serials and installation instructions.
Have kept all dmg files in an Installation files folder on my Tiger machine.
Saved butt as some downloads are restricted to only one download.
Installed the latest version of everything! This is the glory of using an up to date OSX like SL. (and will probably be a problem for the future Lions).

What´s left: Logic Studio 8 and EW Play with instrument bundles that I already have on my disc.. phew :)
AAS and Line 6 POD FARM Platinum and some other left over plug ins and such that I don´t know if I will need anymore.. Hope to be ready today :)

Untill now it has been an easy installation except for the Miroslav. But there is an active topic here on MotuNation about this that helped me out once more :)

Love this place!

so you have used lm without adding a card on the G5 and now the MacPro?most users recommend having lm on it's own fw buss...
I have heard many lm users say that this is necessary to run lm successfully......

Yes, I have used LM without adding another FW card on the G5. Also no extra FW card on the Mac Pro.
But I probably must say I´m only usig the FW ports for external HDs as I have the PCI 424 for my MOTU interfaces.

I use the defaults on the Automation Tab but I also include "Execute Maintenance Scripts".

Done! I´ve installed it all now. All mentioned in my signature and some more. Only have to install the additional IR Impulses and transfere some frequently used plug in presets.

Installed Waves 7, East West PLAY2 and the libaries, Logic Studio 8 etc and transfered four folders containing the different CD projects I´m currently working on and some that I recently done.
They all open very well, .. sorry.. make that "super (!)fast" in DP. The graphics are much faster too.

I opened one hughe project with about 32 tracks of cello audio recordings beside the other 60 -at least- audio tracks in this project. The G5 couldn´t handle this without staring at me and giving me the gay-ball.
Image

This Mac Pro is just treating it like a 5 track audio project on my G5. :) No, make that ONE stereo track! The difference is very significant!

I´m very happy I finally bought an Intel Mac Pro. It´s a beast I´m gonna share my life with for the next coming years!

I´ll keep the G5 for backup as it´s still fully in tact, functional and installed. I even have 2 spare monitors connected to it.
Could use it as a pre/postproduction workstation :)
I abandoned the UAD-1 in there. Donnow if I´m gonna buy the UAD-2 yet. We´ll see if I´m gonna miss it. I feel I have to many plug ins to chose from already.. ;)

I´ll report back later when being productive with this monster machine.

For those still on the G5: well.. it might be the right time now.. Buy a pre-Lion.. Don´t let the Lions eat ya ;)
