FAR TOO LONG??? I'll say. I think it was old (MIDI only) performer 6 or so (?) when MIDI started scrubbing? I always had the speaker clicked on so I could hear individual notes when I clicked them but when I hit 4 to rewind and listen -- BANG!!!!

This was in the early 90's I think - and I screamed and hollered about it saying "WHO THE HELL SCRUBS MIDI?????"

So annoying it was that after Digital performer came out I asked MOTU to send me a copy of an older version of original performer but they replied that since I made the upgrade to DP I was no longer a licensed Performer user.

"Far too long" - yes. And I ask again "WHO THE HELL SCRUBS MIDI?????"

Uh... me.

Who DOESN'T scrub MIDI? Goodness. If you do your work in MIDI, sometimes you have to scrub to find something. Or, you maybe want to hear a resolution between chords, real slow like, and repeat them over and over, forward and backward, listening to how the voices resolve. That's scrubbing, my friend, and I damn sure wouldn't want a DAW without it!

Okay, how 'bout "WHO THE HELL WANTS TO SCRUB MIDI EVERY SINGLE TIME THE CURSOR MOVES?????" 8)

Basically - I never have a need to listen to MIDI backwards. Because of that I assumed it was an uncommon practice.

That's pretty much my idea of scrubbing too. But it can sometimes be rather annoying to hear all those notes whenever you drag the wiper or wind/rewind. It would be nice with an off-switch.

Beginners on the other hand - including myself at the time  - almost always find the scrubbing feature fascinating to play with.

But I would like to be able to turn it on and off without having to go into preferences..
basically having an audible mode button AND a MIDI Scrub button.

I agree that it should be optional. When you've got a gigantic load of VI's and a ton of tracks, scrubbing can be pretty iffy, if not dangerous. Sometimes it feels like it's going to blow up your whole studio!

I'm just saying I'd never want DP to lose the feature. Just add the option to shut it off. Of course, you can hit the audible button on the right end of the control panel, but that doesn't really shut off the processing of sound; or does it? As far as I know, it just mutes the output. The CPU overload is still going to happen in the above scenario.

So yeah, go for it. See if MOTU will include it. Just don't let 'em think we don't understand why it's useful. It's essential for me when I'm tracking.

I agree Shooshie and I use it all the times to find a clashing notes within 7 keyboards, and organ and a brass section.
BUT
There largely scrubbing tool for that. Why not make the scrubbing tool a bit more comlete e.g. When you scrub from the ruler it does the same thing as the playhead do now. That way you can just leave audible mode off and do the scrubbing with the scrub tool.

I think I'll investigate that method a bit more...

It's really amazing how different everyone's experience is. Shooshie can't live without it. In the nearly two decades I've been doing this, I've never once said to myself "Thank God I can scrub these MIDI notes!" Just goes to show that the path to achieve the same goal is never the same.

Being able to turn that thing off would take DP to a whole 'nother level of fluidity.
