There seem to be two groups of complainers in this thread. One is the $195 upgrade. If you are one of that group and has ever bought a $4 buck cup of Starbucks instead of .99 cents from the local stop & go joint then... (said with a Jeff Foxworthy voice" "then you just might be a hypocrite."

The second group is the "DP7 is changing too fast and is not stable." If you have ever bought anything from Sharper Image. If you own any Peavey, Carvin or Behringer gear. If you participated in "cash for clunkers", are using are using a 4 year old computer or have been married for more then two years, and your cash for clunkers car is still on blocks in the front yard. Then "you just might be a redneck and a hypocrite."

If you're mad after reading this... jackpot...

Actually.... I would love to upgrade to Snow Leopard, but I'm in the middle of several projects. It's going to have to wait a bit. I'll probably get DP7 also, and at least give it a shot. But, if DP5.13 works.... why not keep using it?

I suppose the people who feel aggrieved and the ones who spent the $195 and it ended up being a backwards step for them. So FMig. I agree with you, it is insane what we can do with the software for such nominal fee but maybe if you lost business or a few months of work then you might feel, What the heck? (This is not the case with me I might add).
Now, I, personally, cannot understand why you would spend $195 and then not even open the package! Why not hold your money and see how things pan out...or buy the thing and give it a whirl.
My instinct is...•••• I want 7 right now but realistically it probably won't work very well on my current machine....so I'll wait.
It's heartening to me, like others have said on here, that MOTU is still keen on being competitive in the DAW market. It can only mean good things for everybody on here.

I couldn't care less what you call us. Fine but we have to manage our finances too and 400 bucks, 6 & 7 together, to get to the possible sweet version is quite a bit. Add to that the years of paying upgrades and you basically are looking at a $3500 or more software package to date. The off the shelf price isn't much more (street) than both upgrades so new users get all the benefit while the tried true have years in sending suggestions and supporting each other and MOTU and we pay up. I'm not saying they don't deserve to make money on the upgrades but I feel 6 buyers should be prorated and 5.13 should be at 5.2 and work properly with snow. This is how Steinberg Nuendo does it and the previous versions are cleaned up. When they leave a version it usually works and you have to pay for the new feature add ons. Allot to be said about that mindset.

I don't chime in here very often, but I will say that I have made a pretty good living using Performer, then Digital Performer since 1986. I am so grateful that I didn't place my bets on one of the DAW companies that died along the way. If many of you had been around long enough to know how primitive this kind of software was in the beginning, and could compare that with how incredibly f*&^ing fantastic it is today, you'd be on your knees thanking the gods that we don't have to jump through all the hoops we used to to make a good music recording. The power this thing has put in your hands is just sick, and the cost of an upgrade is less than I used to pay for a roll of two-inch. Any day MOTU announces a significant upgrade, my money's on the table.

Sure, we go through some growing pains with it. But with so many vendors involved in the system, it's incredible that it all works so well. I've had frustrating moments, and some have those have been in front of clients, but that happened when the whole studio was hardware, too.

And the leadsheet thing: Priceless to me and all the others who have to work with musicians who read charts (there really are a lot of us still around). I still don't know any faster way to get musicians to do what you want than putting an accurate chart in front of them, especially if you're dealing with anything more than a guitar band or an electronica thing.

My hat's off to MOTU for 23 years of innovation that has made my life a lot more fun, interesting and profitable.

Hey Waxman,

I hear you, a lot of whining accomplishes nothing. I'm one of those who isn't thrilled with paying the $195 for 7 when in my opinion (and that doesn't mean you have to share it), 6 never made it to prime time. It's more the principal than anything for me. I'd feel that way about an appliance or any piece of software. I said my piece, and now it's between me and motu, and frankly, I'll have to pay just like everyone else. Complaining is an interesting way to characterize expressing one's opinion. There's a bit of "you're either with us or against us" going on here, and that may be the flip side of bashing. And I'm into neither. DP is how I make my living and it's really not up to anyone else to decide the validity of how I feel about any of it. If I come here after a bad day etc... and blast away without any concern for anyone else than I say delete me, it's for my own good. Today's been a great day so far : )

Amen to Jerome Gilmer!!

I am in my mid-30's (young to some, old to many), but I am just astounded at what is possible with technology today. For so little money and a lot of musicality and imagination, there's nothing stopping any of us from making our own Pet Sounds or Sgt. Pepper's or...

Sure there may be some hiccups along the way, but it's important to remember: as musicians, we're living in an age of wonder. People who are in their twenties complaining that their UAD2 Solo is maxed out on their mix... give me a break!

As infamously as I have complained about the behavior of the MW Leveller, it's still a minor miracle that somebody has replicated the behavior of a fabulous-sounding opto compressor RIGHT IN THE COMPUTER.

Absolute bananas!

It's important to approach these things with some gratitude and innocent wonder.

I loved your post!

p.s. Yes, I did end up in cranky-old-man-yelling-"get-off-my-lawn" mode in this post.

And no, the irony is not lost on me.

I am very disconcerted seeing how some people complain so much about the $195... I mean, COME ON GUYS!!! PLEASE!!!!

Have you ever realized you spend much more than that on stupid things? Or at least unnecessary things? We are talking here the amount you'd spend with a chick at a nice restaurant! This software allows us to make A LIVING!
Not all of us are using this software to make a living, actually. I'm not.

And for the record, I have never spent half that amount of money taking a "chick" out to a nice restaurant. Some people may think I'm cheap... but I have a lot of other expenses and have learned how to create romantic and satisfying dates without spending a whole tonne of money.

That $195 may seem like a small fee to you. But for some of us it is more of a challenge, and we have every right to feel a little miffed.

Well 200 (240 AUD) is not peanuts to me either I can tell you but for the amount of enjoyment alone it will bring me as opposed to a couple of night outs (I took my wife out for our anniversary recently and spent $90 on dinner) tis not really a big deal, FOR ME.

If you happy on 5 or 6 all is good.

Ps I bypassed 5 and went from 4.61 to 6 because 6 had the Proverb.

I was hoping to bring some humor to this... I find it amusing. I spoke with Dave this morning and he commented Nuendo is $1700 plus... Logic 9 is not working it's $199 upgrade and Apple should have the inside track on the OSX on the code. The alternative Protools is $50k for a rig that is $10k in DP... Cubase, Live, Cakewalk, Traction??? it just becomes a matter of preference. I have used them all and DP6 and DP7 are miles ahead. I own Logic. I own Live.

If you don't need to make a living off it Garage Band is amazing. Economic times are tough. Everyone feels it. But to make negative blanket statements against MOTU is just wrong... it may keep a new DP user from getting the best system out there in DP.

We are in wonderful times of great technology. I would never want to go back to 2 inch analog. I make recordings now that far superior and are miles ahead of what I could do then. I guess I am just saying the cup is more then half full. Thankfullness is in order. Snow Leopard is awesome. DP7 is awesome. DP6 made me a lot of money, gave me a wonderful experience that I would pay $200 bucks for a month if that was the market. Even better is MNation and what James provides to us all for free. So I applaud James in editing out useless negative speak. You want to talk expensive? Go get some therapy for why you feel miserable... Yeah Motu... Yeah James Steele...

this guy gets it... Some of you will end up working for him...
