I don't know... but at some point we're supposed to increase our bets. (Card counting works on a running total system). Of course, they have those constant shuffle machines in many of the Vegas casinos, because you know the odds weren't ENOUGH in the house's favor!

+5 to Jame's Post :P

Yeah, they do a lot to try and prevent card counters from winning now. My dad is AMAZING at card counting. I, on the other hand, got not of that ability with him.

I can't even win at 52-card pickup!

(And for those that don't know, 52-card pickup is a gag game. You ask someone "Hey, wanna play 52-card Pickup?" and when they say yes, you slightly compress the deck of cards in your hand long ways out so they cards start to fly all over the place. Hence, you will then be picking them up)

(And yes, my dad got me on this when I was young)

:)

Card counting is a little like being at a party and keeping track of who comes and goes. It's just a matter of remembering faces. And numbers. But that goes out the window if they shuffle the remainders back into the deck before every deal. I was pretty good at that, but I don't play much anymore. Now... what were we talking about?

I think about something that I saw for the first time in the movie 21. A semi-good movie, but the story behind it is mind-boggling and inspiring.

Sorry to be OT. I have had this daydream/fantasy of taking a week off and undergoing intensive card-counting practice with one of the many computer programs used for this, and going to Vegas and making some money. But I never get around to it.

You can find casinos (mostly downtown in Fremont Street and vicinity) that will still use a (5 deck? 6 deck?) shoe for blackjack. And sometimes you can find single-deck. Still I'd prefer the shoe. But they ARE stacking the odds even worse against the player now. Some of the casinos pay 6 to 5 on blackjack instead of 3 to 2 like it HAS ALWAYS BEEN FOR YEARS. That is to say.... if you hit a blackjack on a $10 bet, instead of being paid $15 by the house, they pay you $12. It's stupid. I refuse to play in those places.

I play blackjack only as a flash game. Because when I lose, as I always do, it's just time I've lost and I reload the page to get my money back :)

I'm a slots man myself. My favorite slot is coral reef. I do not care for all the video slots, guess I am oldschool!

Given all the thread moving you've had to do this year, James, I couldn't resist that one, and laughed myself silly.
I definitely wasn't trying to "get" anyone - playing your role was hilarious to me for some reason.

Sorry if it came across the wrong way man.

There was ONE slot in the Luxor that was like my personal ATM machine for about 3 months in 2001. I could walk in there, deposit $20, and in 10 minutes I'd recoup my $20 plus another $100. If I tried to play beyond that, I'd lose it all back down to my original $20, and quit. But I made a pact with myself to cash in at $100, and I could get it almost every time. Finally, after 3 months, my wife came out to visit me where I was working, and I took her to that slot. I was all puffed up; going to show my highly disapproving wife how cool it was to be able to withdraw $100 and go eat at any restaurant we wanted. Instead I lost my $20. Thinking it was just a fluke, I deposited another $20. Lost it, too. I gave up. They had changed the programming on that slot. They probably thought they'd reeled me in, but I never went back after losing. I probably gained over $1000 from the Luxor during that period, once you count my wins and subtract my losses. I never played another slot that let me win like that. It was, of all things, an I Dream of Genie slot machine. I found it ironic to be sticking my cash into my childhood fantasy, hearing her voice saying "what would you like me to do for you, Master?" and then winning $100.

Oh well... that's my big Las Vegas tale. Not the only one, but it's a good one.
