Wow... PT didn't already have those things? Man they are behind! I'm glad I jumped ship when I did.
its true - that caused me to come over here ( that and the affordability issue )
but with Native processing and now these essential ( cant believe they only just got around to adding them) features - along with the no brainer industry standard compatibility ( waste a lot of time "flattening audio" to embed in OMF which may have issues)
to counter DP really should open up and play nice with other apps like Audio Finder / sound miner ( Logic and Protools do this well)
its smoother for audio post/sound designers..
yes I think protools is getting off it's laurels... ( and what about it's universe view - that is great!!! waaaay easier and more intuitive for those of us dealign with things of a more random nature than music.. )

The ideal is to have something as comprehensive as Sibelius, but as simple as DP for note input (live playing into tracks). PT 9 and above tries to do this, but then it's handing of VIs is still clunky.
Yeah, I tried setting up a sequencing template in PT 9 and wow...so clunky and crashy. DP can handle insane 3rd party VI loads like no other. It must be something in the coding of RTAS or something. Anyhow, I suspect it's not at all a simple matter and therefore DP will remain sequencing king for quite some time.
Here are some features advertised for PT 10 which DP has:
Clip gain - since what, maybe DP 5 (five or more years ago)?
Multiple simultaneous audio formats - started in DP 6 or 7
32-bit floating-point processing - DP has had at least since v5
Real-time fades - DP 7
Fold down for 5.1 mixes - not sure exactly what they mean by this, but DP has had mono/stereo fold down on the master fader for as long as I can recall.
PT does have a few features which I wish DP had - especially MIDI regions - and DAW developers are inevitably in a game of leap frog; but when I got the email from Avid, I had to chuckle - really? Buy a $299 upgrade for features I've had for years in DP?
I laughed hysterically when I received my emails from Sweetwater and other sources today listing the ten key features of PT 10, ALL of which have been in DP for at least a release or two.
Mac Studio 2025 14-Core Apple M4 Max (36 GB RAM), OSX 15.4.1, MOTU DP 11.34, SpectraLayers 11 RME Babyface Pro FS, Radial JDV Mk5, Hammond XK-4, Moog Voyager Eugenio Upright, 60th Anniversary P-Bass, USA Geddy Lee J-Bass, Yamaha BBP35
Select Strat, 70th Anniversary Esquire, Johnny Marr Jaguar, 57 LP, Danelectro 12
Eastman T486RB, T64/V, Ibanez PM2, D'angelico Deluxe SS Bari, EXL1
Guild Bari, 1512 12-string, M20, Martin OM28VTS, Larivee 0040MH
Is it just me or did they not raise the price by $100? I got an email touting a special $100 OFF sale for $599, which is what I believe PT9 sold for when it first went native?

Seems that yes, the price went up by $100. I bought PT9 from Sweetwater
for $599 several months ago.

Yup - the Full Compass catalog from last spring lists PT9 at $599. Ya know, Avid's just a little startup - they need to keep the money flowing in if they're gonna survive.
The PT 10 upgrade from 9 is $299 - $50 MORE than from 8-9. Too expensive for a version upgrade - unless I'm missing something that makes it a really big deal.
There's an old story which I'm sure everyone's heard, which bears repeating. Hunters in some jungle, perhaps Borneo or some place like that, catch monkeys by carving a hole in a gourd, then placing seeds in it and staking it to the ground or a tree or something so that it cannot come loose. The monkey comes along, sees the seeds, and sticks his hand in the hole to get them. It fits perfectly. Grabbing a handful of seeds, he proceeds to pull it back out, but in fist position, especially full of seeds, his hand won't fit back through the hole. As the hunter approaches, the monkey screams in terror and tries to run, but alas, the gourd is firmly fixed and won't yield. Even as the hunter delivers the death blow, it never occurs to the monkey to let go of his catch.
Whether that's greed or stupidity, I suppose it doesn't matter. The result is the same. Avid is like so many other companies -- and humans -- who just don't know when to let go and do what it takes to survive. It seems to me that Avid is just closing themselves off further, then alienating their clientele by raising the prices. It remains to be seen whether this has any adverse effect on Pro Tools. With its vast market saturation it's likely that Avid can pull this off without hurting themselves too much, but one still wonders why they wouldn't take a page from the Apple playbook and charge LESS, while making it play nice with others. The answer, of course, is that Avid thinks like monkeys think.

LOL..Shooshie hit the nail on the head. As soon I saw the upgrade pricing from PT9 to 10, I thought, no way I'll ever pay that. As mentioned, fortunately DP does all the things that the new PT brags about . But maybe using AAX plugin format might make the plugins sound better (monkey thinking). Why can't these apes just use AU???

I don't think so. That's what we were griping about in another thread. Avid came up with yet another native plug-in format, while refusing to support the obvious standard for Mac: Audio Units. Makes no sense unless you're Avid.

I think that TDM is eventually going away to be replaced by their new format.....

I think the disk cache function is a good idea, but I'm not sold on it. To me it's the only remotely compelling feature in this upgrade. I'd rather invest in a larger SSD than in more ram.

+1, no way.
I purchased the native PT for $599 just 11 months ago to try it out. I almost never turn it on as it is. Now they want 3 more bills? Is this a ****ing joke?
Reminds me of why I've never been a Protools user. I can see them reacting to me now:
"Oh, but we have another BRAND NEW proprietary plug-in format that won't work with anything else.. don't you want to be one of the cool people?"
But Avid will do just fine, they have enough drinkers who are afraid of being laughed at by other drinkers, that they could convert to their own proprietary digital audio format, where you pay a licensing fee by the recorded minute, and those dumb saps would still buy in.
