I basically use Quicken to keep track of finances and prep my tax data for my accountant. It works fine as far as I'm concerned, but anything that'll keep the numbers organized is also fine by me.

I used quickbooks and it also worked fine. I prefer the simplicity of quicken. I really don't have any complaints about it or Intuit.

Yours and other posts here have me thinking that Quicken will be fine which is a great thing price wise! I'm a sole proprietor small business owner with no employees so a simple program should do. Especially considering I've been using Excel to tally up expenses for my accountant!

Not to get too o/t but Quicken allows you to create and "memorize" reports. IOW, what I do is create written reports of all expenses and income by category. I get to see each item, date placed in service (for depreciation, etc) not to mention my checking account is literally always balanced with online data from my bank.

I also have "accounts" for cash expenses, credit cards, loans, royalties, foreign income, secondary checking and savings accounts, etc. The reports can include these as combined as well as individual totals and subtotals and place them in tax categories if I want to (and I do).

It really is a rather extensive accounting system for smaller businesses. In the past I could print checks from there as well but I don't write many checks any longer. I'm still using Quicken 2007 as there was never a need for new features in my case. I highly recommend it. Don't know about Inutit as a company except to say I've NEVER had to call them for any kind of tech support. The price is right and it is a downloadable product.

Works for me.

I use Quicken Essentials on 10.6 and Intuit says it is Lion ready.

I don't know if QE feature set is weaker than 'normal' quicken, but for my basic book keeping/report needs Quicken Mac [and now Quicken Essentials] have worked fine for me for 6+ years.

Just to clarify: Products up to and including Quciken 2007 will not work for Lion as they were designed for the PPC architecture. The new version (Quicken Essentials) is 100% Lion compatible.

That was easy, just as the program is. It's the "Logic" of the financial world... LOL.

As long as one doesn't have employees, Quicken is often all you need.

TurboTax can generate W2s and 1099s - well, not the Mac version...

No bill pay. No good for me.

Intuit has two or three mac guys in the whole company. They could stand to hire some more.

James, I wouldn't be shocked by anything when it comes to "that company" (dereferenced to avoid direct Google hits). I won't talk about it in public, but let's just say I don't buy those products anymore. And I knew better at the time I made my ill-fated initial purchases, as I had quite a bit of inside info on the place.

Anyway, back to Lion: we have a developer copy at work, and have for a couple of weeks IIRC. We joined the ADC a couple of years back specifically to get advance releases of OS X and other tools, because many of our customers are bleeding edge and we were tired of getting surprise calls in other time zones at night or on the weekend complaining about how our app stopped working.

The good news is that we have seen ZERO problems with Lion, both with our Java apps and our Qt apps. All of these apps are extremely complex and use a gazillion pieces of technology, drivers, etc., so I'm pretty confident Lion won't cause (m)any hiccups.

Don't get me started on "that" company. I know the creator of Quicken. Not a very nice guy. I'll leave it at that.
