Very funny Post James. I'm a trekkie from way back and have been heard/known to utter DP 'she can't take much more Captain' on large projects.

Funny thing though, she has come through every time just like the enterprise.

I just spent my second night incorporating the new Pultec and Fairchild into what are within inches of final mixes for an entire CD. I'm sold, I think they are great. Lucky me, I got them for free, as I bought the Mercury bundle just this last december...

I hate to say it, but buying the mercury bundle was one of the better moves I have done in the last few years.

The stuff sounds great..let's give em credit for that until the next time it breaks..and then...we can all have fun and hang them all over again!!..lol

i think they are lame as a company and like to warn people before they spend money on them. there are other options.

With every Waves release the update path to Mercury, for me, becomes more attractive. Amongst the Waves plugs I have there's a few I never use but most of them are excellent - I have a suspicion the ones I don't use are great too and I just don't get them yet. Simple fact is that despite occasional difficulties, gripes about lack of support and all the other issues people (and I) have with Waves, the sound is money in the bank for me. DP with my Apogee and Waves is the backbone of my studio business.

I love the Waves plugs, but I've had very bad experiences with the company.

I reiterate..... I love the plugs, but I'm not a fan of the Waves corporate philosophy.

If money is no object, go for it.

The product is high quality.
The loyalty factor is very low.

AFAIK, the max WUP is $200 regardless.

For me personally, the only legitimate gripe against Waves is the fact that they dropped DP support for so long while charging full WUP. In full disclosure, I was one of the lucky ones there - my Waves plugs worked the whole time.

Regardless, to each their own - the beauty of capitalism is that everyone can vote freely with their dollars/euros/pounds/pesos/etc. As was mentioned earlier in this thread, there are plenty of options for everyone.

I am a UAD fan and so I shall remain, however, just like the V-Series, the JJR is just another color... Reminds me of a 30 yr Old Pultec I used in an OLD SSL 4000 Studio.

Nothing to write home about. Not sure I'll spend 800 for them. I did for the API and V series as they were that good to me. Dunno about the JJR. We'll see.

I am not a waves fan, but I like vintage models. Thats what I pursue. The mercury Bundle seems like a waste to me.

I only use SSL, V-Series and API from waves. I have the RenMAx, but use it very sparingly...

In all, I have spent $2000 for all the Waves plugins I use. I only update when they stop working on my rig. Never before. My SSL is still from when it was released. The only Plug I have updated is my RenMax as I had V4.0 (PPC Only) and I needed Intel Support. Had Apple not forced the Chip change, I'd never have updated it.

If I find that I really like the JJR series, perhaps. But a UAD card + Pultec Pro, Plus Fairchild COSTS a LOT less than what waves wants!!!! If UAD had done an SSL emu. I wouldnt have bothered waves at all. Personally for the V-Series, all I wantred was the Comp. Too Bad they didnt make it available separately..... The DSP vs Native fight is pointless. Buy what you like. Regardless.

Today is my fourth day of incorporating these new plugins into mixes in progress. Like the previous poster, I also have the Waves V-series and API stuff, though not the SSL. Today I used the Fairchild on a very problematic singer. She has a very wide dynamic range, and when she gets loud, the sonics totally go to hell. She is tracked with a Neuman u48, through an Amek 9098, though a Tube Tech mono compressor CL 1B compressor. That's top shelf, so no issues there. Once in, she is then fed through the Waves API compressor, which I really really like. Still, those loud notes are audio horror. I put the Fairchild on her in place of the API, and I got 70-80% closer than I ever got before to getting it to sound good. I tried it on several songs, all with the same effect. Good stuff.

I have been using the Fairchild on most of the bass tracks. It seems to accomplish three things: 1 - It levels things off nicely, as you would expect, 2- things feel very nicely "filled-out", lower level stuff is no longer "lower-level", and the bass has a nicer sustain to it. The bass sound like a more expensive bass . 3 - While doing all of this, the attack is actually improved and more defined, which is the opposite of what usually happens when you option 1 & 2. Great stuff.

I have also been throwing the Pultec on the bass a lot. Just inserting it, with NO eq boosted or cut makes it sound better. No joke. Boosting a little at 20hz digs WAY down into the lower depths of bassdom, and brings it into the mix. Yet, like a real Pultec, that band width is impossibly wide. Boosting 100hz will also boost as high up as 1k. But not as an even slope, as a simple shelf filter might. I guess therein lies the magic.

Both of these are doing things for me that the Neve and API stuff could not. Me like. Of course the Neve and API stuff has it's place; I like them no less than I did before. It's all great.

I'm sure the Waves vintage stuff, including the Pultec, sound great. I have no doubts about it. Realistically speaking, though, it's simply unaffordable for me. I can get all the vintage compressors and eq's I want with Liquid Mix anyway, and for less than the price of the single Pultec plug-in. Waves stuff is too expensive, period.

Considering the economic conditions we're in, particularly the price of gas these days, I have to really think long and hard about purchasing any new plug-ins. Maybe I just don't need the "ultimate" Pultec emulation after all.

Besides, I'm counting on the new LA-2A emulation in DP6 to take care of some pressing needs. And as time moves on and I continue to gain experiece, I'm even finding that I'm going back to some plug-ins I used to dismiss as not worthy, including the MOTU Masterworks EQ and MOTU delays.
