Thanks.
Are they connected through the Network connection, right ?
Yep,that's it. :)

I just think that it's cool that you can use the two best music apps, and all of their individual features at the same time, and to get them to operate as one machine is just amazing.

Very True. Using Logic and DP make a great companion. I actually run them together on the same machine and route the audio via soundflower. I still use the MIDI sequencer in logic for the VI's and just route the audio...And everything stays in perfect sync. Its pretty cool when I got Logic and Reason running at the same time slaved to DP. You get the best of both worlds.

What settings do you use to run Logic and DP together on the same machine?
Rewire or MTC or something else?

I want to be able to run them together as well. I prefer to use DP for MIDI, audio edits and mixing but, I like some of Logic's plugs and synths.

You can run them together on one machine with soundflower.

Select by rhythm, position, velocity, note, "similar to", and many other criteria, plus you can layer the criteria for very complex searches. Once you've done it, save your search and the next time you want those criteria, all you have to do is click that saved search in the menu. Can't beat it! Click here and check it out.

PS: that feature was suggested in detail by yours truly for a couple of years, along with many others, and they finally added most of them at that date. Some of the others, like color-coded MIDI tracks sharing a single edit window, would have to wait a few more years. Hey, it's the truth, and I can't help it if modesty is difficult for me. :D

transfer MIDI via iac, transfer audio via soundflower, very cool.

but how do you send transport controls? or does that just happen via mtc?

sorry if that's a dumb question.

Hey,
Not knowing what you've done, here's some steps that should make it work simple enough.

First you need to make sure your AMS set up is correct.
- open up the Audio MIDI Set up Utility
- double click on the IAC Driver
- activate by checking the "Device is Online" box

Next let's set up DP
- double click on the "Slave to External Sync" button. This will open up the "Receive Sync" Pref
- on the left, chose "Transmit Sync"
- "Transmit MTC" set to "none"
- "transmit beat clocks" set to IAC Driver & hit done

Logic Setup
- With a logic project launched, choose Logic Pro/Preferances/MIDI
- select the "sync" tab below
- select "MIDI Sync Song Settings" in the lower right corner
- in this window, select "Synchronization", and then the "general" tab
- where you see "Sync Mode" choose "MIDI Clock"
- engage the "slave to external sync" button in Logic's export, and you should be good to go.

I Still do MIDI sequencing in logic for logic instruments. So, really you end up working with doth DP's and logic sequencer. Its not too bad for me because I have a 20" and 17" monitor... I have the room for it.

To go to the next step of transferring audio back to DP from Logic, check out cycling 74's free utility Soundflower. If you have any other questions just let me know

Enjoy

Oh, Yes...It is possible to MIDI sequence Logic instruments in DP, but it can get fairly complicated and annoying to deal with (routing MIDI and such). I just found it easier to MIDI sequence logic VI's in logic, then just route the audio via soundflower to a stereo track in DP. Once you have what you want from logic, record that material to the stereo track in DP. And of course as far as editing and mixing your takes you use good ol' DP. This is exactly how I do it when I slave reason to DP via rewire - just keeps it simpler for me.

This is great stuff! I have both Logic and DP and since I am new to DP working with them in tangent would be very cool. I've followed the steps, but I seem to have an issue with DP. I start DP and then start Logic. When Logic starts I get a message from DP saying that my audio card has changed and then DP gives me the beach ball of eternity. Is there a setting I need to use so the two programs can share my Focusrite 26 I/O?

One thing to check -- do you have the same sample rate set from both applications? If they are not the same that might cause this type of problem.

Good luck!

Shooting in the dark here, but, maybe you could trouble shoot (if the sample rate fix doesn't take care of it) by assigning one app to a different soundcard, i.e. the computers core audio internal sound. A different audio interface/soundcard probably will have a different latency- this is just to see if both run then. If so, perhaps core audio doesn't support multiple applications simultaneously accessing one interface, or at least your version of core audio- maybe a different OS10 revision or different MOTU version, or focusrite drivers- or maybe just the focusrite wouldn't be compatible with that feature. Or try DP or Logic in MIDI only mode and see if they both run and sync, and build from there.

Good luck

Does soundflower add any latency delays?
So if Logic and DP are sync'd and audio routed through soundflower, can DP then route audio from DP into a Logic input channel, and then use Logics Distributed Audio processing for that channel to use an additional networked computer for a node adding AU plugins on the second computer, without signficant drain on the host computer?

If so, and it is straightforward and stable could this obviate many concerns about efficient CPU use by DP and plugins, and how many can be instantiated?

The possibilites could be great for those who explore the little viewed path, and for those who learn from them.

I am going for Logic, the new MCU in first thing in the morning. I worked on it today and it is just elegant and works great. Not bailing on DP but I like the MIDI and VIs. I would spend 499 just for the VIs

So my question is will my Dual Core 2.3 (the last one before the Intel machines) still work with no Latency etc. How about the MOTU hardware. They are using Symphony and Intel machines on all the demo's...
