I've been looking at the kernel extensions and frameworks, and one of the frameworks has been updated: FWAUserLib

The documentation is here

And, in short it's the system service that allows applications to do things such as creating isochronous audio streams over Firewire.

Apogee Ensemble users, time to test :)

Doh! There's that 2 week download time to consider.
Better start now....

Neat! I wonder if this will positively impact my Firestudio's niggling FW issues. (loss of clock on sleep...some other stuff.) Or my Novation SL's habit of crashing CoreMidi...

One can only hope, I suppose.

I looked at that document and saw some commands that some software manufacturers seems to use a lot:

FWADisposeFWAudioDevice
Destroys an audio device object.
FWADisposeFWAudioEngine
Destroys an audio engine object.
FWADisposeFWAudioMIDIPlug
Destroys a MIDI plug object.
FWADisposeFWAudioMIDIStream
Destroys a MIDI stream.
FWADisposeFWAudioStream
Destroys an audio stream object.
FWADisposeIsochStream
Destroys the isochronous stream reference.
FWADisposeMIDIStream
Destroys a MIDI stream reference.

After the prep of backing up, running TechTool Pro 4.52, Apple's Disk utility to repair disk and permissions I took the leap...

I ran the updater, after it finished updating it required a restart. (I think it rebooted twice automatically)... I repaired permissions.

(Remembered that I had Dashboard disabled (to save resources) so I enabled it and re-ran the updater rebooted, repaired permissions again )

Launched DP 5.11 and...........

So far So Good! :D

Of course I may not discover if anything's broken right away but so far so good!

What I'm hoping was fixed:

I was having an issue where certain situations would kill audio output completely... Usually when I was running Antares AVOX, but sometimes switching presets on MX-4 during playback would cause it... I would hear a small pop and then loose audio until I went to hardware setup. This would happen regardless of the buffer settings and sometimes without clipping the performance meter too! (I'm using a Tascam FW-1082 FireWire interface) also, before the update, my BFD output assignments in the instruments windows under bundles would get lost and switch over to Ableton Live...

We'll see if the update helps anything :D

Exporting to mp4 STILL doesn't seem to work.
A small thing, but annoying.

I just downloaded 10.4.9 and Itunes whatver and all my A/V stuff seems to be working fine.

And Quicktime exports to mp4 just fine.

i have 10.4.8... i wonder if my version is "fixed"...?
It's recommended for 10.4.8. From my Software Update screen:
  • "The 10.4.9 Update is recommended for PowerPC and Intel-based Mac computers currently running Mac OS X Tiger version 10.4.8 and includes general operating system fixes, as well as specific fixes or compatibility updates for the following applications and technologies: blah, blah."
I've loaded it on my box and have been working in DP for a little while. Seems cool.

So what..that's not the point
If it's offered as an export option in DP, it should be working

Is there some version or some special component of LAME that needs to be installed to do mp4 export? I was thrilled just to get the mp3 export working.

As I understood it (and I may be wrong) quicktime was the underlying
engine for mp4 export.

Hey S,

Which version of Quicktime are you using? I'm still on 7.1.3 and OS 10.4.8 so, I haven't been able to try it out in DP yet. I'm just curious...

Anyone have any preferences about the combo updater vs. Software Update?
