I am having the same problem as everybody eles here. I run a (mirror door) dual G4 1.25GHz, DP5.1, OSX 10.4.7
and it's crash city !!!

I've done all suggestions on the phone with tech. support. (Barrett was great, he tried his best to help out, and I think he's on the case)

I even clean installed a fresh OS ( to be fair, this was an already scheduled maintenence day)

but still..... It's crashing, just like everybody eles

I think it's hurry up and wait for MOTU to issue the proper update (5.1.1 ??)

I hope my chiming in helps light a fire under somebody's butt !!
I got a studio to run here!!

hi there, please send your crash report (and possibly your file) to motu, and please post your crash thread here.

this will give them more data about the crashes were getting and help solve the problem quicker. (see above for an example) thnks.

this thread is becoming a potentially valuable bit of quality assurance/bug testing. (in addition to us just feeling better knowing others are crashing too.)

Update: A cranky followup note to MotU got a reply in short order. A fella named Barrett is now communicating with me. Seems like a nice guy. In any case, I went through the usual just-to-be-sure rigamarole:

1. Disable Pre-Fill Buffers in Configure Studio Settings
2. Raise buffer size to 1024
3. Disable or Delete any unused audio/aux/instr. tracks
4. Switch to Medium Work Priority
5. Increase Host Buffer Multiplier to 2

Several minutes later I get the familiar crash log. No dice there.

So I send off the new crash log to Barrett, and he says
We are aware that some Intel-Mac users are having continued issues, and are currently working on a new update, but I don't have an expected time frame on when that will be posted.
So my next step is to do a Prefs trash and permissions repair but I won't have time for a couple of days. I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm just joining the party. iMac Core 2 Duo running 10.4.7, MOTU 896HD interface. DP 5.1 crashes *constantly*. I have never, ever in my 10+ years as a sysadmin seen a program this unreliable. It's astounding that it got released in this state.

well, close to the same vein, but not eaxactly the same I am having all the same crash problems only I am running old school DP 4.12 and OS 10.3.9, and iBook G4. A big problem is that as DP crashes is seems to corrupt the file, possibly. the more it crashes the less usable the project becomes. I have talked to tech support and gotten the usual advice, which works teporarily. Should I go down to 16 bit istead of 24? and how do I find the crash report? Sometimes it crashes when it seems like I am straining my computer too much and other times crashes when it shouldn't. this never used to happen, any advice.

DP crash & bounce to disk

Post by yaking »

Ever since 5.01/5.1 ....... So much was fixed, so much is broken. I'm keeping track of every form of technical voodoo to keep my systems working. Fresh format/os. Clean install. Mac Janitor. Disk Utility. System Optimizer. Clean plug-ins folder. Trash preferences. Seperate drives for everything. Delete Analysis files. Delete undo files. Delete unused files. Copy project to another drive to defrag. One project per drive- closer to the beginning-half of a drive= 2x the speed at the end of the drive. And last but not least BOUNCE TO DISK IN REAL TIME.

For such a great sounding system (and large investment) of hardware and software, I'm starting to wonder whether or not it is worth it.

If anyone else has some magic, contact me! I would love to put together a list of do's and do not's!!!

after months!!!, No solution from tech suport. I don‘t know why and I think they know about several people that need to run their recording studios. Since DP 5.1 to this time I can‘t record with DP 5.1 on my intel mac. Same crash problem, and no defragmentation, optimisation, cache cleaner, Ram added, DP configuration, deshboard off, reinstall (DP and OSX) several times, reinstall aplications one by one... nothing seems to fix the problem.

Still having No fun. glad my career is not relying on this.

same crash, different day. no word from motu.

a drag.

hmm. now i'm no engineer, but having spent so much time looking at these crash reports, and continually seeing the "MasMakeNonStandardSurroundSettingID" message, makes me wonder if we could some how short circuit, or turn off, the surround selection.

any thoughts from you DP veterans and guru's?

(while we wait for a bug fix - aka 5.1.1)

I tried this:

It's getting better!
DP 5.1 is still crashing, but not as often as before...
Now I can work for 1hour/1hour and half without crashing...
But sometimes, and randomly, DP5.1 still crash...

And now I'm used to tip "Ctrl" + "S" every 5 minutes, so I don't get angry...

Update: Trashed preferences manually (Users>Finn>Library>Preferences>entire DP folder + com.motu.digitalperformer.plist) and repaired permissions with Disk Utility. No dice.

Response from MotU:
Thanks again for the info, I have forwarded this on to our testing department so that they can have a look as well. As I said before, we are very actively working on an update that will be addressing these issues so I will definitely keep you informed as soon as I get more information regarding this.
I wonder if they'll give me my money back, if I send back their software and manual? That's my next tack, I guess...

Running DP 5.1 on a Macbook 1.8 ghz , 2 gigs RAM , Mac OSX 10.4.7 ,
Hitachi 7200 rpm internal SATA.
I was having a few crashes , most of them when I'd leave a session opened and the Macbook iddle for more than 10 minutes , since then
I made hardware settings recomended by Motu tech earlier in this subject:
1. Disable Pre-Fill Buffers in Configure Studio Settings
2. Raise buffer size to 1024
3. Disable or Delete any unused audio/aux/instr. tracks
4. Switch to Medium Work Priority
5. Increase Host Buffer Multiplier to 2
strangely I have not crashed since , I'm using my Macbook mainly to
take work home so I'm using built-in audio and no third party pluggs or V.I's , but I've been running pretty hefty audio sessions .
I don't know if this help , I'll post if I start crashing (hope not).

I'm in the same boat as the crashers. I seem to have tried everything mentioned here with no luck. VERY VERY frustrating. How can try to run a buisness with software thats useless.

Today, dp was crashing every 2 minutes.

I'm running a mac pro, dp 5.1, 828 mk2(black lion mod)

10.4.8 - not much better for me.

discovered the new os version (intel). installed etc.

started ok. played thru a track, no problem.

left it sitting idle for 5 minutes. crash!

checked error report. it was "thread 11" but not the old favorite: MasMakeNonStandardSurroundSettingID + 209

worked for 30 minutes or so (saving after every key stroke)

then got a crash when i checking send assignents from the mix window.

yes, the old favorite:

any other attempts at 10.4.8?

happy to hear that a motu fix is in progress. one of the notes apple had with this upgrade was "improved audio playback" in various audio applications.

maybe this instability is partly apple's fault.

10.4.8 continued.

tried some of the things recommend above: (disabled prefill, host multiplier to 2 etc.)

got in a good 30 minutes of work. (saving constantly)

then the "do nothing" test.

dp crashed again while simply stopped. (and yes, my macbook energy saver is set not to sleep.)
