828mkII glitchy noises / clocking problems

Post by Numina »

I've got the following setup:

Access Virus TI --FW--> 828mkII(Ver 1.00) --FW--> 828mkII(Ver. 1.01) --FW--> Carillon Windows PC system with TI IEEE card.

The only other connections I have are other audio coming in via 1/4" connections.

My PC is a P4, 2.4Ghz, 1mb RAM

I had a lot of trouble trying to get the clocking to work between the two 828s so that I wouldn't have the glitchy noise constantly coming through, but it only goes away after I open the MOTU CueMix console. So, I leave the CueMix console open, however, many tasks I do in SoundForge like zoom in with the mouse or click a tab there is a glitchy sound in the right channel and the audio from the .wav file drops out for about 2-3 seconds. Same when using SONY ACID - if I drag a loop across while it is playing the sound drops out on both channels. If I click on a .wav sample or do anything like switch to another tab I get glitchy noises. Same with Audobe Audition as well.

I recently purchased the second 828mkII Ver 1.01 and never had this problem when I used just the single 828mkII Ver. 1.01.

Can someone please post some troubleshooting tips on this matter. It would be greatly appreciated. I can't figure out what the problem is.

Thank you!

I forgot to mention that I also have the following connection in conjunction with the previously mentioned setup.

828mkII(Ver1.00) --SPDIF--> 828mkII(Ver 1.01)

This is just a guess, but perhaps you are overloading the FW bus at times. I have had problems with multiple devices on the FW bus on my G5 causing all kinds of problems which went away when I installed another FW card in my computer. I know this may not be an option for you, but maybe some experimenting with different devices plugged in and not plugged in the your FW bus might lead you to discover what is going on.

Andy - thanks for the response. I was wondering the same thing myself.

What is a recommended FW card for PC to use with the MOTU units?

Jesse -- Yes the FW bus has issues, especially when you consider that audio must constantly be getting through, and then maybe you try to load a file over the same bus, or store audio while recording.

I run a Mac, but I don't think the brand or type of card is real important, just having another bus is the important part. I would get one that you can return if it doesn't work, and maybe get a common brand.

Good luck!

Just to follow-up on this. I was able to get everything to work OK by disconnecting the FW from one of the 828s. So, basically I just have 828#1--SPDIF-->828#2--FW-->PC

I can't control the 828#1 via CueMix though. Oh well, it beats pulling my hair out any more.

FWIW I have two 828s on the same FW bus and I run the out put form the second one into the first via S/PDIF for monitoring purposes. I have had no problem with overloading the firewire bus even recording 18 ch @ 24/96

I have recently also had clock issues and eventually solved them by changing the way I organized the slave and master clocks.

I now use the mac built-in clock as a master and slave both 828s to it. This has worked really well so far

bast of luck
