Re: Just Got My Dual 2.3 Ghz
hey guys - dont worry so much about the liquid cooling, if the cooling mechanism breaks down, temperature sensors will kick in as normal and stop the cpu running if the temperature gets too hot. theres no danger of your CPU getting "fried", UNLESS both the cooling system AND the sensor die at the same time - which is VERY unlikely.

Re: Just Got My Dual 2.3 Ghz
You heard wrong. It;s 10.3 that won't BOOT on the 2.7. But 10.3.5 through 10.3.9 does. So I had to juggle. I installed 10.3.0 on a firewire drive. Downloaded the 10.3.9 combo update and updated it. Carbon Copy Cloned it to the Dual 2.7. Piece of cake. It took me a minute to figure it out though.

Re: Just Got My Dual 2.3 Ghz
Heya All!
I'm the friend of Dr. Pepper who is very interested in the 10.3.9 on a Dual 2.7.... (Thanks a TON Dr Pepper!!!)
I had called both the Applestore in Santa Monica AND Apple Tech support and both folks told me specifically "The New G5's will only run on Tiger due to firmware updates" The Apple tech support guy said that it was partially due to cooling / fans / etc.
BUT it seems that it is possible - way cool! (so I can use Protools sooner than 1+ month from now)
There had been a lot of talk about liquid cooling in this thread. As a professional audio recording engineer I live and die by Apple, and know many many hi-end professional users of G5's. I've been waiting 'till now to pull the trigger and get a G5 for myself.
The two things I know are: up to about 3-6 months ago many 2.5 G5's did randomly have more than a few problems with fan noise, cooling, etc - especially right at the launch of the 2.5
I was also told by a very experienced friend that it was a crapshoot - he put it as "many new Powermac G5's (2, 2.5, whatever) have had significant hardware problems, regardless of model, BUT Apple has finally gotten it sorted out."
I also saw with my own eyes (a year ago) that for extremely high track counts (Protools HD - TDM), say recording 60 tracks at once of 24 bit audio at 96k, the dual 2 was a faster, better, more solid machine than the 2.5
However, to the best of my knowledge, all that had changed about 3-6 months ago.
I know people with Powermac 2.5's and they are VERY quiet and solid. I know people who had lemons, sometimes with the 2.5 going nuts only weeks after a year had passed. (thus... just out of warranty.. as they didn't buy applecare - no joke!!)
(MORAL = always buy applecare! If you shop around It can be found for $149 - worth it for 2 more years of warranty!!!)
I took the leap and bought the 2.7 dual.

Yessss!!!! I don't think you'll regret it. It's a beautiful machine. Well done!!! They shipping it or did you pick it up? On April 27th, 10 in the morning, I ran down to the Apple Store and less than an hour later I was unpacking it at home. Enjoy!Originally posted by scoreJRO:

Heya Henry
It arrives tomorrow - I had it built by Apple - I 'pimped it out' - bluetooth, airport, a bit of extra RAM, 400 Gig HD. I hope I'm 1/2 as happy as you!!

Re: Just Got My Dual 2.3 Ghz
Man! You really DID have it pimped out. You'll be even happier than me! I ony have the 250 gig hard drive, no bluetooth. I have airport in my powerbook. I have 2 gig ram for now. I was going to get a bigger hard drive but decided that I was really testing the limits of my wife's patience. I get a second drive cheaper later. Ram too. Maybe bluetooth too!
So does "it arrives tomorrow" mean TODAY? Cool. I'me excited for you.

Re: Just Got My Dual 2.3 Ghz
I'm especially excited about the 2.3 G5 series... mainly because it forces the price down on the previous series....
If anyone has a good line on a dual 1.8 g5 with some respectable amount of RAM, drop me a line:
adingley@gmail.com
I'm selling my Powerbook 1ghz that's totally pimped out... I should be able to trade even up... give/take
