DP 5.1 is crashing on my Macbook

Post by dbrownstein »

I installed DP 5.1 yesterday on my Macbook and am getting intermittent crashes.

I started by attempting to own old files created in 4.6.1 for mixing. I kept getting crashes at varying times. sometimes mid song, sometimes while making some change in the mix or configurations.

spent some time on the phone with Motu tech support. was advised to trash audio units preferences and to rescan audio units. also was suggested that i use the LOAD feature for old tracks instead of just opening since it would better convert the file to 5.1 format.

did this, and still got crashes.

then spend some time recording a totally song, with idrum and 7 tracks of audio. no crashes, totally stable in this stripped down configuration. (no plugs attempted, yet.)

fyi: am using waves plugs as audio units. some of the crashes were caused by attemting to load 3 or 4 processor intensive waves plugs (like the IR-L) but crashes were occuring before installing waves plugs as well so i'm skepitical if that's the only issue.

equipment:

828 (old one) attached via firewire
la cie 300 gig drive (7200 rpm) attached via usb
2 gig ram
macbook 13" - 2.0 ghz
10.4.7
waves 5.9
(fwiw am using additional 19" monitor.)

any and all suggestions will be appreciated!

thanks.

All I can say is I empathize with you. I have an iMac that I'm running DP 5.1 on and I am also getting intermittent crashes. And this is without using very many CPU-intensive plug-ins. In fact, CPU is at about 40% with multiple audio tracks and a couple of VI's. But without warning (no CPU peaks, no playback glitches), DP will decide to shut itself down. Very random. I've learned to Command-S every minute or so. It's very frustrating. I'm no genius with computers or DP, so I have no consolation for you. I'm hoping someone on the forum has keen insight as to what the problem may be. (Personally, I'm holding my breath waiting for the next DP update.)

I'm running:
Apple iMac Intel Core Duo 1.83GHz (I didn't have money for the 2.0)
1.5GB RAM
Very strange that I should be experiencing such problems. Pro Tools is working just fine right now on my Mac. But I really like DP and thus I hold my breath for some kind of solution. :? :?

Start by pulling plugins and adding them back. The only time DP 5 for me has crashed was a plugin issue. (this was on a PPC, not intel)

On my intel, DP 5 hasnt crashed yet. and I have done some things with it that, on my G5, would have had me gritting my teeth and wondering if I hit the save button. :)

Same here no rhyme or reason, tried a reinstall of DP no luck. Still getting crashes. Tried Pulling all non DP plugs, still get the crashes I'm about to do a full system reinstall as soon as I can spend the down time.

My system is

17" MacBook Pro 2.16 GHZ Core Duo
DP 5.1
BFD
Waves Musicians Bundle, AU's only
M-Audio Firewire 410
LaCie FireWire 800 300GB

Anybody find any solutions?

i've been wondering if 10.4.6 might be more stable than 10.4.7 (that's what i think when i consider re-installing my os)

i'm still getting random crashes today. preceded by a short crackling noise.

have been reading/looking at the crash report, which are starting to look almost familiar now.

you can see which "thread" crashed and look at the info below. i'm often seeing a reference to motusurround or something. i'm not using surround, but maybe there's a bug in there or an incompatibility or something.

i've sent 5 or 6 crash reports to motu over the weekend.

same thing!!, same behaivor on my intel based iMac. In the crash report appears a problem as follows:

Thread 10 Crashed:
0 com.motu.MAS.framework 0x01e8b00a 0x1e4c000 + 258058
1 com.motu.MAS.framework 0x01ec0d96 MAS83079 + 9692
2 com.motu.MAS.framework 0x01ec2539 MAS83079 + 15743
3 com.motu.MAS.framework 0x01ec25f1 MAS83079 + 15927
4 libSystem.B.dylib 0x90024b07 _pthread_body + 84

sometimes thread 9 and 11 crashes in the same way, with a MAS framework thing, sometimes appears:

com.motu.MAS.framework 0x01eab5d0 MasMakeNonStandardSurroundSettingID + 218

but like you, dbrownstein, I‘m not working in surround.

reinstall OS X (10.4.7), DP 5.1, repair permissions, testing RAM, cleaning cache... unuseful until now.

thech suport is not responding my mails (I‘m a registered user, of course).

I‘m waiting at this point for the next up date!!!!!!!!... or may be to tray with another audio aplication like Apple‘s Logic. :?

Baffling. I wish I knew where to start.

Have you run this just using built in audio to eliminate a driver issue????

If you did and mentioned that, I missed that commentary

Do you have the latest drivers for the 410?

Have you tried DP using the built-in audio hardware?

If you still get the crashes with built-in audio, send me your DP crash log and I'll take a look.

for those of you following along at home and comparing crash reports here's the thread that crashed on me: (whatever that means.)

thanks to all for your help, suggestions, and sympathy.

I was having intermittent crashing on my MacBook Pro as well.
I removed all PPC plugins, used the "Load" function (*or drag/dropped song file to chunks window).

Everything has been good since (knock on wood).

Now if I could get a Intel version of MachFive I would be whole again but I guess that is a comment for another forum.

i've been using the load/chunks function to open up existing files/mixes, which has been essential in getting them to play at all. i don't have any ppc plugs on my macbook as i only loaded dp 5.1 and waves.

am wondering if maybe it's my 828, but got a crash just using built in audio (as noted above.)

thanks for your post.

giles are you running 10.4.6 or 10.4.7. I'm wondering if this upgrade is causing the problems.

I'm running 10.4.7 and I get random crashes like crazy.

Anybody getting 10.4.7 to work or conversly anybody getting crashes with 10.4.6?

"I installed DP 5.1 yesterday on my Macbook and am getting intermittent crashes."

I started with many crashes and unexpected quits on my Macbook/DP 5.1/Waves, but things have seemed to have become more stable. I am working more carefully now however - saving often and allowing processes to finish before starting another (I had crashes changing plugs while playing and adding tracks while playing etc. so now I stop transport when I need to do such things.)

It is not a robust combination by any means but it is workable for the time being while waiting for 5.1.1.
Cheers,

Suddenly, I feel less alone. I'm getting a very similar log:

I was sure it was a ReWire problem at first, because DP and Reason ran fine independent of each other...but now DP is crashing without Reason ever being launched.

DP's crashing every 2 to 5 minutes. Totally unusable. I see from other threads here that heavy re-installation may be in order...will post here if it doesn't solve the problem.

Maybe it is 10.4.7 problem, I dunno.

Hi all...

I used to be a DP user back in the 2.x/3.x days on OS9. I switched away from Macs (to Windows) when OSX first came out.

Recently I've picked up a Intel Core Duo Mac Mini to stick my toes back in the Mac waters. I'm running the latest DP5.1. I'm using a Mackie Onyx 400F as my interface. For the most part, everything is working pretty well.

I'm having few problems:
  • DP will occasionally quit with no warning or any messages of any kind... It just vanishes. The operating system asks me if I want to restart DP.
  • Bounce to disk is hideous. Sometimes it'll complain about the disk latency (huh? Shouldn't the bounce process just proceed at the speed of my drive?). Other times I'll have huge gaps in my bounces. Very, VERY disconcerting. My workaround is to record my mix to a stereo track instead of bouncing.
  • Recording is less than reliable. I've seen signals get "chewed up" by DP. When it screws up it seems like someone has strapped a bitcrusher on my recorded signals. Sometimes the timing goes wonky, too.
I don't really have any 3rd party plugins installed yet. I'm thinking about picking up a couple of the Wave Arts plugs. For the time being I'm mostly using the plugins that ship with DP (I'm doing pre-production work, not mixing, so it's no big deal).

I'm guessing most of these issues are due to the early Universal Binary support. I have great hopes that later 5.x releases will straighten a lot of this out. I also have Ableton Live 5.2 on this system. I've had zero problems with the Onyx interface (including recording) or anything else with Live.

However, now that I have DP back, I've re-realized what it does for my writing process. DP lets me write music more comfortably than just about any other package I've used.

Once the situation stabilizes, I'm planning on migrating to a Mac Pro system.

p.s. I'm floored that DP can't bounce a VI without printing it to a track first. It's 2006! I think it's the only sequencer that can't do that. :-|
