Audiofire - does it work well with MOTU software?

Here's where to talk about preamps, cables, microphones, monitors, etc.

Audiofire - does it work well with MOTU software?

Post by Tomas E »

Is there anyone here who has experience of using an Audiofire with MOTU software? I've just found a model that would suit my needs.

Compatibility with drivers etc?

I am also interested in AudioFire interfaces. Thinking of getting Echo Audio AudioFire 4.

Seems that not so many DP users use this.

I have had good experience with Echo. The diver support isn't the best but I liked the sound very much. Even the cheapest MIA PCI card...
(This is only my personal subjective opinion, I am just a composer and not an audio pro)

I use an Audiofire8 at work and it's getting the job done. But I prefer much more my 896HD at home. If I was you, I would go for a MOTU ultralite that has the same feature as the echo for just about the same price. Just for the cuemix and it's implementation within DP it's worth it. I find that the console for the audiofire isn't really flexible. You can't return your mix within DP like CueMix for live monitored bouncing. You also have to customize your work priority and multiplier settings if don't want to have any problem with clicks and pops.

That said, if you're only looking at the sound quality of it, the audiofire is decent for an interface this price.

I agree with you about the Audiofire Console. Could you please explain the clicks and pops part? I've experienced some of this during my sessions. But I don't understand why they occur.

I had to modify my work priority and raise my buffer. But that was with DP5.1. DP5.11 has been better on that.

I'm not in front of my G5 now but I think I had to put work priority at low and multiplier @ 2.

All these work priority and multiplier buffer had been pretty confusing to me, but after trying a few I finally found a setting that worked.

I just did my first session recording with DP and an Audiofire12.
Don't get me wrong, I'm no newbie, but it's the first time I track using this particular setup (used to have a 001/PT LE) and I have a question:

- I couldn't find out how to send my main mix (stereo bus) to Audiofire's console software, so the singer could hear his vocals and the mix thru the console.
Since I couldn't make it work, I just bypasse the Console and did a whole mix using pre-fader sends within DP 5.12 to an output on the AF12.

This works, but sending a full mix via AF Console would be faster to do.

I'm using console 4.6 with DP 5.12 on a macbook.

By the way, when I was doing this, the session had 12 tracks, a whole bunch of plugins and the buffer was at 128, multiplier 1 and priority "high".

Didn't get any pops or clicks.

Oh, tracking at 44.1/24

Thanks guys
