DP 4.52/BFD
Hello,
Can anyone please explain to me how I record the audio from BFD?
I work with drum editor but I can't figure out how to record the instruments (kick, toms.....) seperate.
I tried BFD ultra, stereo and so on.
I just want to proces the instruments and also the room, pzm mic's as seperate audio.
Thanks

Are you using BFD in ReWire mode? This is the only way to get more than stereo outputs from BFD in DP. Check FXpansion's webite for more info.
Of course, you could always separate MIDI data per drum, solo each MIDI track and record the audio output from BFD into multiple stereo tracks to build a multi-tracked kit in DP.

What?!? Are you saying that the only configuration available without ReWire is "Stereo?" "Ultra" and "All" won't work? This is absolutely false.HCMarkus wrote:Are you using BFD in ReWire mode? This is the only way to get more than stereo outputs from BFD in DP.
Did you mean something else? Perhaps I didn't understand you?
Hello,
BFD will only work with multiple outs (Ultra, All) with DP 4.6 and above. That is the first version, I believe, that supports multiple outs with VI's. I'm running 4.61 and have all the output options in BFD including the 16 out Ultra mode. DP version 4.5x doesn't support anything but stereo outs with BFD.

Niken:
What I do with DP 4.5 and BFD (stereo) is separate the various kit elements to their own MIDI track:
Kick
Snare
Hat, etc.
(I don't work with the drum editor, but I'm pretty sure there's a way to pull the kick, for instance, over to it's own track)
Set the region (1|1|000 to 98|2|138 for instance), then select just one of the individual MIDI drum tracks, and the BFD instrument. Freeze that track. It's done in real time so a 4 minute song will take 4 minutes to freeze.
A new stereo audio track will appear containing the audio for that drum sound.
It will be called something like BFD Freeze Track or something...I like to rename the audio, in this case "Kick".
Now highlight the second track (snare) and the instrument again. Before you freeze this one, though, make sure overdub recording is enabled, cause the freeze command will overwrite the previous frozen track. (It doesn't erase it, it's still available in the soundbtyes window)
Freeze the second track...it will be on the same audio track of your previous freeze.
Rename the new file "snare" and add a new stereo track and drag the new snare audio to that track.
This works for me, although it is time consuming...8 or 9 drum tracks x the length of the song.
(If it's just an occasional tom fill or occasional cymbals, you can shorten the process by selecting the region right before the event and shortly after...allow time for the ringout)
(and watch your levels)
Hope this helps!

Thx for explanation, I already did it that way but found it indeed time consuming...
Rainmaker, I know the 4.61 upgrade but I'm still on OS10.2.7, 4.61 requires OS 10.3.7 I believe.....
Markus,
Yeah it works with Rewire, but everytime I close a project with Rewire DP close also?...
Thanks a lot everyone for your reply.

It is always the same question: Do I upgrade now to (possibly) save time in the long run, or keep working with my system as-is because I know it works?
I was able to use the Re Wire approach with BFD successfully, but the key was setting up a good template so I didn't have to reinvent the wheel for every project. Regardless, it was a pain keeping track of and loading drumkits everytime I opened a project, or changed the buffer size.
It is hard for me to recommend going to 5.1 right now, based on the troubles folks, including me, have been having. I am now hopeful that I have my system fully functional, having moved from Waves and AutoTune MAS to AU. I love many of the workflow enhancements provided in 5.1, especially track folders and track arming (separate from mute), and the AU pre-rendering. Things have been running smoothly now for a few days. Fingers crossed.
Moving to OS 10.3.9 and DP 4.61 may be a good bet for you. Nominal cost, and good stability (for most!).

I agree,
I would pay the small fee for Panther (look around on the web and you can fine it cheaper than full price). and upgrade to 4.61. I'm planning onstaying on Panther and 4.61 for awhile until all this Intel/UB/PCIX/DP5 stuff gets smoothed out and can all play nice together. Right now, DP 4.61 and Panther/Tiger is the absolute most stable setup if you want to run a modern DP system. I always stay a version behind both in the OS department and the DP department just because it's a way more stable place do operate and run a business in. But I've had great stability and performance with Panther and DP 4.61 and it would solve all your problems with BFD.
Good Luck,
Rainmaker
