Serious pet peeve...

Post by soulful strut »

...automatic audio from a website. People, if I wanna hear music, ads, buzzing flies or whatever, I'LL turn it on.

Okay, I feel better now.

Thanx!

That annoys me also, but not enough to qualify for a "pet" peeve.

Flash animation peeves me even more. Flash seems to me to be for the attention-deficit crowd. All the crap jumping around is very distracting. I like to be entertained as much as anybody, but I go to web sites for content.

I hate animated banner ads, too. Now, THAT's a pet peeve. I realize that the banners pay for many sites, but I will avoid most sites with banners. They give me a headache.

How about the "Your computer is infected with a virus - Click Here now to scan your system" banner which looks like a Win XP warning box. Luckily on Mac it's pretty obvious that it's a pop-up but how many Windows users would have been caught with that?

Well, have you encountered the new ads that start talking to you after about 5 seconds? I'll be just a little ways into an article, and all of a sudden the head in the ad starts to talk to me, and I HAVE to find the damn controls to turn it off. I usually hit reload to see if I get another ad. With one ad, I had to copy the text into TextEdit just to read it without interruption. THAT qualifies as a pet peeve!

Quite often a quick solution I use is to grab safari's scroll bar with the mouse and keep hold of it while I read the webpage - often any banners with animation or sound are frozen by doing this.

For example if I do it on this reply page I am typing on now the animated smilies stop blinking, smiling etc.

One for the tip sheet?

Oh man. That situation reminds me of when I'm working at an edit facility, and all of a sudden, we're likely to hear some extremely loud squeal coming from one of the rooms where somebody pulled a patch that resulted in a feedback loop.

Come to think of it, I'd rather hear the feedback than an advert.

Yes, it irritates me too, and far more than animated banners and flash ads (both of which can easily be removed by utilities like Adblock). The audio is especially irritating when my significant other is asleep while I'm surfing. After an hour of browsing in silence, I suddenly hit a site with sound blasting out at 85 dB.
Uh, oh. It's the doghouse for me.

I wonder, is this punishment for 85dB heavy breathing and squeeling noises? :D

It'd be ideal, as would be the case with many insipid strategies directed at us, if these irritations were "opt ins", not "move heaven and earth and if you're lucky you may be able to opt outs".
Ridiculous.

PS: In my experience, it's easier to move house than it is to halt all (physical) junk mail here in Oz.

Hey Arth, thanks for that tip. I installed Ad Block Plus, and now I can serenely join in on some otherwise cool forums, as the banners are banished!

Agreed, Jim; and on the Flash animations thing, too.
Again, this stuff really matters with a 2k connection!

I usually hit reload to see if I get another ad.
I usually click the back button and never return to the site. I hate when audio autoplays on sites, too.

Due to my speed-challenged connection, I thought I'd be alone in this.
Cool, so I'm not the only one missing out!
