Fifth Third Bank... yeah right!

Post by James Steele »

Is it just me or are these ham-handed phishing emails getting tiresome? These guys aren't even as clever as the fake Pay-Pal guys. Who ever HEARD of Fifth Third Bank? Geeez. Uh yeah, sure... I never heard of you, you don't exist, I don't have an account at your non-existant bank, but what the heck... I'll follow your link and input my sensitive personal data.

Doh! What dopes. I gotta wonder how many MILLIONS they have to send out to hook a single person that gullible? I've probably received no less than 40 or so of these in the past month. I get one or two per day. Would capital punishment for spammers, phishers, and malevolent hackers be too harsh?

Well, uh, actually as a letter carrier for the Postal Service, I have seen mail from a Fifth Third Bank. One of my patrons got statements from them every month. Of course, I got an email like you describe from them a month or so ago. And I got one from PayPal yesterday with a zipped file that was an .exe file once it was unstuffed. Don't you just love all the bogus crap you have to go through every day just to see the email you wanted to get?

Oh good... knew we wouldn't get far without a slam on tech support. :-( I'm sure you were probably joking, but if you ever worked in tech support (or talked to someone who did) they do get more of their share of "Oh, you mean the interface has to be connected?" type calls.

Ahhh... I stand corrected. Out here on the West Coast I'm not very familiar with that institution and I thought the name looked very odd. I have multiple email addresses and I'm literally deleting 2 to 3 of these bogus emails per day.

Yes James, I have worked with Tech Support at one of my jobs. And, sadly, they have to assume that most people calling in are idiots. Because... well... most of us are.

'Tis the human condition. That's what I don't believe *intelligent life* from other solar systems would bother visiting us. I think they'd slow down, look at us, shake their heads (or whatever they have) and keep going! ;-)

James,

That punishment would be too lenient.

Is "Fifth Third" one and two-thirds or a fifth of a third (one-fifteenth)?
