Video Sync in DP for Projection Live?
Not sure how to do this, hoping someone here might have an idea.
I currently play in a band where the majority of our drums where recorded live to DP and we play them off a Powerbook live. We would like to sync video to the drum tracks in DP and send them to a projector. Can this all be done within DP? We are currently running DP 4.5 which I don't believe this will work, we can only have one video clip open at a time, plus I'm not sure we could send the video to the projector without DP showing up on the screen. We stiil need to see markers in DP to select songs from the set, so I'm not sure if we would need to run 2 laptops to pull this off.
any help would be great.
Thanks!
Chris

You should be able to do it by routing DV video out the firewire port to a digital=>analog converter which you feed to your projector. I'm not familiar with DP 4.5 but from 4.6 you can have a different video file for each sequence in a project - it might take a while to change between them in between songs though - have you got a front-person that's a good talker?

We usually play 4-5 songs back to back withouth stopping so that would be difficult. Is there a way to have 1 sequence end and automate a new one to start? Basically have each drum track on a sequence with a video file then they could be all linked.
I wish there was a way you could set an end time for a movie and then have a time for a new one to start within one sequence.

In what way do you want it synchronized?
Are you trying to project patterns that are generated by the drum track, as in the iTunes visualizers?
Or are you just trying to keep a slide show or video running in sync with the music?
It sounds like you may be better off using SMPTE to run a digital video deck, or something to that effect. But I can't tell what you're trying to do. Normally, SMPTE makes all this very easy. I've done it many times, and everything just locks up and tracks to the master (DP).

I'm not sure about DP4 but in DP5 you can choose to have either one movie for all sequences or a different movies for each one, which should work for you. Also, using a DV converter you send the video out from DP to the converter which you then hook up to a projector. If you don't have an actual standalone converter a DV camera with analog video out (Deck mode usually) can be used instead. Its basically the same setup we use to do audio post. We send video out of DP into a sony converter and then to a video projector.

Yes were trying to have video synced to drum tracks that are played out of DP.
This is one way I was thinking of doing it, I was just trying to see if it was capable to do all within DP.

Perfect! Thanks, looks like it's time to upgrade, were still on 4.5
So do you basically give the movie clip and end time and give the next one a new start time?
Each song is a sequence. When you double click on the sequence in the chunks window the new video loads. We just leave the start times to 00.00So do you basically give the movie clip and end time and give the next one a new start time?
00.00. You have to deselect "use same movie for all sequences" in the movie sub menu.
Re. what VSOMEDIA mentioned earlier, I recommend a Sony Camcorder as your Digital to Analog video converter. (Digital Video file loaded into DP sequence, outputs to the firewire port, firewire into Camcorder, converts to Composite (analog), out from Camcorder with composite video cable to projector.) I have tried 3 different dedicated D to A video converters to run video from DP with less than satisfactory results. Ended up with a Sony Camcorder with great results. My two cents.
Thanks Xylo - Yeah I have a little Canon DV that we'll use as the converter.
Thanks for all your help guys. Not sure if this is gonna work for us though. Basically every song we play is going to have video, and we usually play 4-5 songs together without stopping. I was hoping it would be able to open video on the fly in playback.
I'm thinking I may try to just do it out of Final Cut.
Thanks!

I have been doing this in DP for a number of years now wiyh a Powerbook. What I have done is put your sets together and then render out a stereo gude track to edit a long(whole set visual). Go back into DP and open it in the movie track. Drag the movie over to your other monitor or projector and size it to the screen by dragging the lower corner down. When you start the set it should be synce'd with the visual. If you want to loop the audio then the video will follow. I usually compress it to 320X240 and it still looks good in a club. Keep in mind that your audio track count will go down but you can always prmix some of the set. ! Have fun. Go to my site I have alot of video that I have done in regard to this
