Need HELP with recording MOTU 828 into Cubase SX

Post by museic »

Thanks to everyone who helped me out on my last conversation about what I need to record my bands jams!! Now I need some advice about using this fine piece of hardware!!!

I just got my MOTU 828 in the mail from eBay and I'm having problems setting it up in Cubase. My friend just bought Cubase for the purpose of recording our jams; and we as of yet haven't figured out how to use it...

I have been able to successfully record through my M-Audio MobilePre USB with my guitar, when recording single channels of audio, and doing some layering...

So I have a little understanding of the program, but not enough to set-up the 828 obviously.

Can anyone tell me what settings I need to link this thing into Cubase SX? I have been able to record some sound but I can't figure out how to bus it to monitor, or to set up multiple tracks at once...

Thanks in advance!

Hey museic, I'm assuming you have an 828 MKII and not the original so here goes:

To record multiple tracks at once you will need to go to Devices/VST Connections (shortcut: F4). Here you will be able to access your inputs/ouputs/monitor routing options. You will most likely see one stereo input already as a default. Right click and it will give you the option to "Add bus". Choose this and select mono/stereo or whatever you need. Also rename the bus to whatever instrument your using. On the right side of the screen it will list "Device Port" - this is where you select what input on the 828 you want for that bus (ie. guitar is plugged into Analog 3 - select Analog 3). If you do not see any input options then most likely they are not selected as visible (Goto Device Setup/VST Audiobay/VST Inputs and check each input).
This should now show up in the mixer on the left side where the inputs are. Best to leave this fader at unity and adjust you gain in MOTU's Cuemix. Create an Audio track and select above in the inputs/outputs section the input bus you just created (ie. guitar). Now the audio is routed into an audio track ready to record. If you select the little monitor speaker button on the track you will be able to monitor whatever FX you might have added to the track. If u want to record with FX put them on your new input channels. Better to record dry i think and use the "Direct Monitoring" option in the Device/Device Setup/VST Audiobay to route straight thru the 828 and avoid latency.

All this applies to outputs also. So you can set up what tracks are routed to what outputs on your 828 in VST Connections and above your audio channels.

Please anyone correct me if i'm wrong here as i"m not the most knowledgeable Cubase user! (Also i'm still not the best using Cuemix so if anyone could post some basics about getting the most out of that and creating multiple mixes feel free) In any case, the manual will be able to help you...

Thanks for your Help!!! I have a much better understand now with where to go with this... I think it'll take lots of tweaking - but thats the fun part right! I don't have the MKII tho, I have the MKI, if that matters at all.

Thanks again

I should've pointed out also that u can save this setup as a template so you dont have to do all this everytime you record. Makes life easier! As for the MKI, it'll be the same process but I'm not sure what cuemix is like with the MKI.

CueMix is non-existant in the mkI.
~It all works out in the end~
