Firewire conflict between 828 and firewire drive

I just got me an old 828, probably " mk1". There's a strange problem, which seems to be some kind of firewire trouble between 828 and external Western Digital drive. Recording is some kind of possible if I start it from 0.00, later not, playback never...Yesterday I tried Lacie hard drive, and it worked fine. Same thing if I record into the internal drive.

WD has worked fine with my ESI U24 usb sound card and with Final Cut Pro, too.

What to do? Is there a way to get WD and 828 working together? Lacie worked fine even when I daisy chained it after WD. Should I use WD's usb connection instead of fw? So far I have prefered fw...
