Ugh... it is sloooooooowwwwww... am I sure I have the right intel build, because this seems like its running under about 5 emulation layers.

I just ran something on a Duo 2.16 MacBook maxxed out memory - that barely pegged in Logic - about 2/3 of the processor in DP - followed by a COQ (LOL)

This is truly depressing. I don't even know what to say.

Dp UB

Post by smidijack »

I have been using Performer for 20 years (since berfore Digital was part of the title). I waited. For awhile. Then, I figured I may as well give Logic try, as it was something I always to look at anyway. My wife's a teacher and so I was able to get the Express version for $150 and actually use my Imac Duo. By the end of the first week I was ready to get out my 80-8 because it was so UNintuitive. Patience. Then it began to click. Then, I realized it dealt with audio editing much better than DP. Then, much better instruments. So, just as I'm about to upgrade to Logic Pro I see the DP UB on Versiontracker. Yippee I exclaimed. Well, the disappointment is off the charts. DP runs like crap, (but not slow, as the previous poster mentioned) the instruments all sound cheesy, (and MSI doesn't even work right!), it doesn't appear to support very many of my UB AU's at all, and the biggie.. Logic SOUNDS much better. And this is still with Express! My friends were right all these years.

I ordered my Logic Pro upgrade. Bye-Bye.

So, Logic Express sounds better than DP?
Pull the other one, mate!

It's been said before to defectors, but don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I was under the impression there where a few posters (with Intel machines) mentioning

Thanks for that, sdfalk.

I laughed myself silly once when a defector was treated in a similar fashion, and so couldn't resist 'avin' a go myself!

It's definitely not normally in my character to talk like that; it felt strange.
However, I'm not sure we need bedroom propellorheads telling us that their (and their friends') apps sound better than DP.
Those dreamers can argue whose representations of 1's and 0's sound best on another forum. We work with facts here.

Yeah, seems to be the exception rather than the norm.
I'm hoping dougieb gets this sorted soon.

That's funny.
Thanks for reminding us of this delusion, bongo man!

Perhaps we could get smidijack to explain to us his myriad reasons why this is the case?
If he's obedient, I know where to find him...

He's asleep (sleep it off buddy), dreaming happily about Logic (happy dreamin'), unbruised, on the other side of the Nation's door (don't let the door hit you on the way out)!

smidijack's post smells funny to me. Using Performer for 20 years, but doesn't mention how long he's been using DP. And only 7 posts to Unicornation. Maybe he's just a reader and not a poster, but it smells a little "troll-y" to me.

I can buy that Logic handles VIs better than DP - even the staunchest DP advocates have admitted this. But Logic "SOUNDS" better than DP? I have heard people say this before that one app "sounds" better than another, etc. I just don't buy it. What your audio sounds like is determined 98% by your A/D converters, your studio wiring, and the quality of your plugs. The other 2% could be attributed to the implementation of pan laws within the DAW. But in terms of processing 1s and 0s, which is all any DAW does, I don't buy that one app can make 1s and 0s sound better than another app, assuming you are running through the same A/D interface when you make the comparisons.......

I've read about phase cancellation test carried out with different DAWs. Nothing suggested that the exported audio files had any differences in them due to different host programs.

Bravo.

Can you imagine it?
"Here, I've got a Chinese 1 and a couple of French 0's. I bet they sound better than any Indian 1 or Irish 0's you've got. Naaa-naa-naa-naaaaa-naa."

I hope for his sake the poor chap can sleep it off, 'cause it sounds serious!
Of course, it'd sound more serious on his system, 'cause those 1's and 0's, well, they just "shine" in his Logic engine.

Actually, it's true that some apps DO sound "better". It has to do with the summing. Go to 3daudio.com. There was a huge discussion there on this. They made up a CD of 30 or so mixes, all the same material, but "summed" in all different systems. All the Mac and PC daws, plus a few digital boards, plus Neve & SSL, as well as some of the "summing" boxes like the Dangerous 2 Mix and Manley. It was super carefully done, pro all the way. And yes, they really did sound different. Some very much so.

Nobody was told what was what, it was a blind test. After a few weeks, the "key" was released. The results greatly shocked people. Go check it out....

But, yes, there are sonic differences between DAWs.
