FWIW you should be able to find a 7600 or 9600 mac for 50 bucks or less. They're often free on Craig's List.
That would allow you to run 8.6 and transfer your files.

bad installer disk perhaps?

regardless, i doubt that you need to get back to os8.6 to run DP2.5.

I know os9.0.4 works with DP 2.5, and 2.6, and i would be fairly sure 9.2.2 would too. firstly, i assume you have enough RAM, though i cant imagine a dual-1gig with too little RAM for DP2.6!

also, you would want to make sure your RAM is all good. Maybe consider increasing DP's memory allowance too. set minimum and recommended to 256MB or so in "get info", then try and launch it.

Seeing as you got the same results on your friends G4/400, I expect you have a corrupt installer disk. I almost 100% sure I ran DP2.5 and 2.6 on the same kind of G4/400agp as your mates. Definitely ran DP2.72 (what a stable version of dp that was) anyhoo.

too bad- i doubt MOTU will send you a new DP2.6 disk.

the best mac that can run os8.6 would be the PCI G4's (aka Yikes!). when the G4agp (sawtooth) came out, they required os9. I think Dan Knight might be mistaken on lowendmac there.

best of luck,
Dave
