Attention any WD Raptor 10K users
Hey guys just wanted to throw this out there and see if anyone might know what's causing this....
I just purchased a WD Raptor 10K 16MB Buffer internal drive for my G5. The capacity is 76G. I loaded up a project that I've been working on for awhile and when I hit play it would go for a few bars and then stop. A DP error came up saying it couldn't read the buffer and said the disk was too slow....how in the world can this happen with a 10K rpm drive with 16M buffer? anyway, this seems odd and was wondering if anyone else was or has experienced this....oh sorry, my buffer in DP was set at 1024 with the host multiplier on 2, I have 3G of ram in my G5 2.7 DP, my track count is relatively low around 15-20
thanks in advance

There is a SATA compatibility issue with the G5's, using some of the new WD drives. The solution seems to be adding a seperate SATA controller card. Below is some info I copied and a link about this problem.
Problem:
After installing a WD4000YR, WD4000KD, WD360ADFD, WD7400ADFD, WD1500AHFD, or WD1500ADFD, the computer system will hang (lock up), necessitating a system re-boot.
Cause:
The Apple G5 tower does not support certain standard Serial ATA interface protocols used by the WD4000YR, WD4000KD, WD360ADFD, WD7400ADFD, WD1500AHFD, and WD1500ADFD hard drives resulting in an interface lock-up. This causes the computer system to hang.
Resolution:
The only work-around we have identified at this time is installing a SATA Host Bus Adapter (controller card), effectively circumventing the on-board interface.

Hope this helps.

I put a pair of Raptor drives in my Dual 1.25 G4 via a Firmtek PCI SATA card - one for OS and apps the other for sessions. (All samples are via external firewire drives).
A friend of mine reckons running the OS on the 10k drive is not a good idea - information passed on from one of his hardcore Linnux mates. The system seems a little less stable since installing on the 10k drive so there may be truth in that or it could be because of the PCI card interface???
The drives, however, are very fast and I'm leaving things the way they are for a while.

Lots of stuff and a recently acquired ability to stop buying

the pci card is probably the way to go I'm guessing, only thing is, I only have one slot left, I'd rather use it for another UAD, my video card is actually covering one of the other pci slots so i'm already down 1. Do any of you guys think the 8 MB buffer drive would be any better?

I wonder if the new macs will recognize NCQ on the seagate SATA drives? These new drives with NCQ are faster than WD Raptor.
