Possible fix for Bounce To Disk problems

Post by David Polich »

Monday my 828 MKII started acting strangely after doing a BTD - high-pitched squealing, no normal audio in or out, meters not working. Rebooting the unit would bring it back online and it would work properly, then I'd do another BTD and wham! - toasted.

After rushing over to Guitar Center to buy a new 828 MKII (I was in the middle of a client's mixdown), I hooked up the new one and all was well. So - I emailed MOTU tech support asking for an RA number so I could return my original 828 MK II for repair.

Tech support e-mailed me back today and asked me turn off the "sick" 828 MKII, disconnect it from the Mac, power it up and "Reset to Factory Defaults" (it's the last page of the "Setup" menu"). I did that and the unit now works fine and there are no BTD problems.

I posted this because if you're using a MOTU audio interface and having BTD problems in DP, doing what I did might be a cure. Or it might not. It's one more thing to check -

I think DP stands for David Polich. :D

Thanks for the info-- this one goes into my printed MOTU notebook. Very clever troubleshooting tip.

Curious: are you going to keep the new interface or return it?

Keeping the second one. I can put my original in my live gig rack, thus eliminating the need to pull the studio's 828 MK II everytime I have a gig.

I did the factory reset last month and it solved a bunch of problems. It solved my Quicktime problem. It solved my Reason problem. I don't bounce to disk but mix through an AUX and then into and audio track. I have been experimenting with when I turn on my 828Mk2. I had been turning it on before I boot up my G5. Now I wait until my desktop is up and then turn it on. I noticed if I turned it on before my G5 the meters would all peak into the red upon starting the computer. That did not happen with my G4. So far so good.

Very cool tip.

Maybe that's why I've never had any problems,

I have RME's.

I'm wondering-- there seems to be a consensus among 828 users, but are there any 2408 folks out there who have had the BTD problem and have tried the interface reset solution? Other interfaces?

I have a 2408mkIII and I haven't tried the reset thing. Last night was another BTD nightmare even after merging all soundbites. Can someone explain the reset procedure for the MKIII as my dog ate my manual. :?

For setting 2408 MKIII's (or other newer MOTU interfaces like Traveller and Ultra-Lite) I imagine the approach is something like it is for the 828 MKII - push "Setup" and then scroll until you get to the "Reset Factory Defaults" or "Restore Factory Defaults", and then push another knob to execute. There should be a prompt telling you which knob to push.

I don't own every MOTU interface there is - if you have question,s contact MOTU tech support via e-mail (or try calling them).

I don't know how to reset factory defaults on the old 828.
